Help please!

Picked up this 1617-4 from Ebarf last week. With the exception of some fine cracks in the neck binding, this guitar is absolutely MINT, and I mean everywhere, except for the fact that the knob is messed up and not working, and the electronics are hanging down, banging around inside. It was packed terribly, and the box smelled like dog 'poo'. Getting delivering and be so much fun and so stressful sometimes! The box was in such bad shape that I was sure the guitar would be damaged, but she isn't!

What should I do with this? What would YOU do with this? Change the electronics completely (as if I know how to do that), or just clip them out and use it as strictly an acoustic? Should I worry much about the neck binding cracks? They are very slight, and this is an OLD guitar. If I did change the electronics, can someone suggest which one to put in?

I'm thinking of using all these d@mn guitar boxes as weed guard in my back yard. Eco friendly! I have guys out there now doing fall pruning and it might be a good idea. I mean, you can only save so many!

Thanks in advance!
;)

I would have your local luthier take a look at the 'tronics and determine why they're flopping. There's probably a loose wire from bangin' around.

Or ya could have a 'local' OFCer check it out fer ya.

Binding cracks are fairly common on older gits. I have several that way and it doesn't bother me since they were noted prior to purchase.

Yes, Iffy, I agree about the binding cracks, and the seller disclosed them and showed several photos of all sides of the guitar. The guitar is very beautiful, I think.

Maybe the electronics thing can be easily fixed. I'm letting her cool off so I can change the strings and hear how she sounds.

This is a crappy time to be receiving/shipping guitars, and yikes, I have some coming this week that I am very concerned about. I'll just make sure I let them acclimate to my house's climate before I do anything.

It might just be the battery box that has come loose. The battery could be dead, or with enough rattling around, a wire may have broken. We've seen stories here of batteries causing real damage to guitars during shipping.

This is a good reminder that you should always ask people shipping guitars to remove the 9-volts from the older style pre-amps.

There are people here who can help you with the electronics, so don't let that worry you too much. If the rest of the guitar is in great shape, I'd say you got a good deal.

I meant: "getting/delivering guitars CAN be ..."

Um, I need to learn to proof read (and to think I used to edit for magazines)! Geesh. Old-timer's creeping up ...

I thought about bidding on that guitar, Willa. I think you did really good. It looks beautiful, enjoy it.

As I noted on the ning page, all the stuff you're worried about is very very minor. You got an absolute steal there and with a little work, it will be a gem.

Congrats.....

Thanks, moody. I did well on this one.

Is the P.I. after your user name because people tell you that you look like Magnum PI, haha? My brother resembles him (and so do you on quick glance, and that is a compliment), and he gets the 'PI' thing all the time ...
