When it's just me, it ain't much so I toss it all into this gym bag over the shoulder thing and I'm good to go. With the trio, well the stuff has grown, more mics, more cables, little expensive boxes that require even more cables. Now it's heavy. So I switched to one of those $30 Wal-Mart pilot cases with wheels. More carrying capacity, easy to move and when you unzip the thing you can see everything at a glance. This is especially nice during teardown when I just throw everything into this wide open case, zip it up and get out. Sort it all out when I get home.

I like all the compartments and the adjustable sizing. Of course it was pretty damn expensive gear bag, but considering you got a free OFC Guitar with it, I guess it wasn't too bad. The "Will Robinson" gear backpack that Cliff has is pretty nice as well. Dave

You can usually get them from Home Depot or Lowes for about $25.00, and the one below is on Amazon for $20. I use the kind with a foam insert for mic's and for cables, tools, tuner, meter etc etc, I take all inserts out. The light gray color makes it easy to find stuff in low light. For transportation, they just stack, or line up, and you can put stuff (that's not too heavy) on top of them. Very convenient, and look nice too. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BDISDW

Then fold it over on itself as many time as it takes until you are left with about a 2' bundle. Then just tie the whole thing in a simple knot in the middle and toss it in the bag. They never get tangled. As to the question, I've got an old gym bag for cables and mic's. I found a perfect size padded nylon bag for my Vocalist Live 4, and my GNX 3000 has its own mini flight case.

This stuff develops a "memory" once it's been coiled, and if you just invest the initial time of "training" it when it's new, it gets easier with each subsequent time. Various bundlings/knottings give you nice, manangeble packages, but when you UNbundle it, you've got cable that twists to the left, THEN twists abruptly right, and is somewhat unmanageable. Cable that's been coiled in a consistent manner tends to lay flat/straight on the floor and REcoils easier as time goes by . . . I usually start by creating one size coil (dependant up cable length) in one hand, and as I'm feeding the subsequent turns, I "twist" the coil lightly in my fingers to "feel" which way the cable WANTS t'go & feed it onto the coil in that direction. Eventually, you end up with coils of cable that "know" no OTHER way t'go . . I use those velcro cable-ties, as well.

I leave the effects board (in an aluminum tool case described by Miles) with a few cables and the monitor amp (Phil Jones AAD) in a closet at the church. If I need it for a solo gig, I take it home. I was using the Access gig bag provided by Al with the OFC guitar, and still keep it fully stocked in the bandroom, but it can't accommodate a music book or binder. Now I use a backpack for the essentials (cables, music stand stuff, tools, strings, etc.,) plus the music. With the backpack on my back and a guitar in one hand, my other hand is free to work doors and carry a coffee mug. For solo gigs, I swap out the coffee mug for a collapsable rolling dolly and pile on a bigger amp and the effects case.
