| In my hand, I have two sets of strings. Which set do I put on my Elite T?
At this moment, the Elite T is strung with Martin SP Bluegrass (13-56), and I like them, but I want to experiment (but in that experimenting can be expensive, and in that I really hate the process of changing strings), which do you suggest I put on first?
1) Newtone Masterclass PB 13-56
2) Dean Alchemy Gold Bronze (which I like on my Martin D16-GT) 13-56

Location: closely held secret | Well, you said you had 2 sets in your hand, but you mention 3. Which 2 do you have in your hand? Try those.
I've tried lots of brands/types. The trick is remembering which one I like the best overall long enough to order some more. |

| I have edited my original post so as to rid it of that particular ambiguity.
I'm trying to choose between the Newtones and the DM Alchemys. I guess, though, it's not a huge deal. I'll just pick one and go with it.

| Which ever ones suit your tastes my friend. We all have our own prferences. I have been using the Adamas strings because I can buy them in sets of ten or more quite cheap. But now that I am playing a lot and Giging some...I change them more than ever.. I am now trying the Nanowebs. So far so good. These have the very light coating on them and I do not have much noticable loss of sound at all. I am pleasantly surprised! So far they have outlasted any strings I have ever bought. If they make it through the next week of heavy practices they will be my new strings of choice. And will save me money in the long run because of the frequency of sting changes I have returned to.

Location: closely held secret | Highway, I honestly wasn't trying to be picky. Just the OCD kicking in. Been watching too many Monk DVD's lately.
You know that different strings can effect the sound/tone of a guitar. Well, a good one, anyway. I find it interesting to try various types of strings, trying to find the ones that really let the guitar sing. I figure I'm going to buy strings anyway, so I experiment. When I find the right ones for that guitar I try to remember to use those.
I can afford to do this now. I remember too many years I had to buy the cheapest I could find, and save the old set in case I broke one, because I could only afford one set at a time...
If you have both sets in your hand... try them both! |

Location: Orange County, California | I'd go with anything Phosphor Bronze... My curiosity gets me though.... Why the hell are you putting medium guage strings on your Elite-T?? You should just buy Stephent28's DS-768 long neck or a Bass or something.... Seriously consider some Adamas 1818's or D'Add EJ-16's. They will "let the top breathe" (british accent intended) more, and really bring out some cool overtones and harmonics. I'm even going to bring my U681T to the tour with Savarez Argentine's (11-46) on it to see what it sounds like... |

I thought the thread had died an instant death, so I was surprised to see your responses, and I thank you sincerely for them.
mtnbikerfred, I hear what you are saying about mediums, but I use an alternative tuning and tune down a bit, so it becomes impossible to get the guitar setup for 12-54s (which I actually prefer).

Location: Gig Harbor, Washington | I LUV the DM Alchemy's, but for the sake of experimentation, have you tried a set of D'Addario Chromes? I use them on my Preacher D', but I recently played my brothers' Custom Balladeer with a set of Chromes - very new experience - did someone say 31 Wonderful Flavors?!?
There's more to life than vanilla - so live on the edge and get out of the box...
Don't tell anyone, but I've even custom blended sets (kinda like cross-dressing!)... |

| Flatwounds? I really hadn't considered them, but maybe I should--after all, it is only recently, after I picked up an Elite T and began playing it, that I realized that all my preconceptions had been misconceptions.
In regard to the mixing and matching, I remember someone posting to rmgga that the D string was this brand and the E string was this other brand, etc. I hope I don't get into that. I want to simplify my life, not complicate it.
And I have a whole shoebox filled with orphan strings from my electric guitar days of my not-do-distant past. |

Location: 6 String Ranch | Just to confuse things more, where are you going to play this guitar? Some sets sound best in your quiet living room and some sets will sound better on stage through the rig (as Randy said using Nanowebs). I've always liked Phosphor bronze and not steels or brass but there are sometimes when those sound really good.
Try them all and add the info to your memory banks of what produces what sound in what conditions and go from there. |

Location: San Angelo, Texas | I use Martin SP+ on my LX and my 1984 collectors series. Great sound and awesome wear. I can get 4-6 weeks out of a set pretty easy, playing 10 hours a week or so. For studio work I use fender flat wound steel. They are only good for about 4 hours, but man what a sound! On the 12's I use Martin 80/20 bronze extra lights...good wear and great sound..... |
