Location: Central Florida | I'm having to thin out the herd a bit, and I'm trying to figure out which one will go. So I'm soliciting opinions from you all to see which one you would put on the selling block if you were in my place. The two I've narrowed it down to are; my '71 Glen Campbell Artist, and my recently acquired '73 Legend A/E.
Here's my dilema:
From a player's perspective, I think I would prefer to keep the Legend. For one thing, it has a pickup, which is obviously more practicle should I ever need to use it in a live setting (the GC is acoustic only). And I do prefer the deep bowl sound of it over the more mid-range intensive artist bowl on the GC.
On the other hand, from a collectibles standpoint, I would think the GC would be more desirable simply because the model has been out of production for so long. There is also a certain amount of "sentimental value" attached to the GC, since it was Glen that got me hooked on Ovations in the first place. I should also add that the Legend is the better playing guitar of the two, as I've never been able to get the action on the GC exactly where I want it (it may be in need of a neck reset).
Both guitars are about equal in terms of condition (both are excellent to darn near mint), and they are more or less identical cosmetically (except for the difference in bowl size, of course).
So there you have it... What would you do? Would you go for practicality or collectibility?

1) Godzilla is walking toward your house, crushing everything in his path. You have only enough time to make one trip carrying only one guitar. Which one do you grab?
2) Purely business - which one if sold would net the highest return?
3) Which one would be the best to donate on auction to the OFC with the profit going to your favorite charity?
4) You had to ship both UPS. You get a call that one of your packages was completely lost. Which do you wish it was first?
Try all four scenarios and see which came out on top! If it was a tie - sell nothing! |

Location: south east Michigan | Yikes....this sounds like one of those "decide who has to jump out of the lifeboat" situations.
The practical part of you says keep the Legend. Your heart says keep the GC. Sentimental value has at times complicated my life also. I would say don't keep the GC just because of a market value it might or might not have. Other than that, can't you get rid of a piece of furniture instead?

Market value is theoretical unless/until you sell the item and the value then is what someone is willing to pay you for it. I guess that would make me lean toward practicality if I absolutely had to get rid of one of the instruments. But surely there's a piece of furniture that you can unload instead.

Maybe ponder how much you really NEED an A/E??
If it we me, I'd NEED the A/E for gigs even though I'd be more inclined to follow the "sentiment/collector" route and keep the GC.
I guess I'm not being too much friggin' help here am I? :rolleyes:

Location: Canton (Detroit), MI | If it were my decision....collectability be damned! One should always keep the one that you will PLAY. If the Legend is more suited to the type of music and setting that you need, it stays, the GC goes.

Location: Warren, OH | After re-reading your post, I'd ditch the GC and keep the Legend. That deep bowl has gotta come in handy when you're unplugged, and the pickup's there when you need it to play out.
The GC may be a better collector's item, but unless you play it, why let it collect dust? |

| Regarding value and collectibility, if recent eBay prices are a valid indicator, both guitars are practically equal, assuming that the physical conditions are comparable. In recent months both guitars have sold on eBay, and the selling prices have been almost exactly the same.
About six months ago, an 1127 GC in Excellent condition (perhaps Near Mint) with Glen Campbell's hand-written signature on the label went for a little over $300.00. This selling price is within the current range for the 1127 and 1627 models.
Unfortunately, in reality the GC 1127 and 1627 models are really not much more collectible than other period Ovations, and the only truly "collectible" GC model remains the 1968 Glen Campbell Deluxe Balladeer with the deep, shiny bowl.
And, Glen Campbell is probably not presently gaining any (at best not many) new fans, thus limiting the collectibility of his memorabilia to the finite fan base that was established in the 1960's, 1970's and perhaps 1980's. As he (and we) get older, at some future date only diehard Ovation collectors will care that it was a GC model.
In summary, as previously stated by others, it goes back to which guitar you like better, and which guitar you play more. In this case, collectibility and value are not an issue. |

Bring both to the Orlando Guitar show Jan 31/ Feb 1 and walk around with them. Let the public make the decision for you. At least you'll have an idea which might be easier to move. |

The general gist of your replies seems to affirm how I was already leaning: Sell the GC and keep the Legend.
Dave, funny you should mention that about the trus rod cover, as I was already thinking along those very same lines. W-2, you mentioned the Orlando Guitar Show... Don't be surprised if you see me there with at least one of these under my arm! Although, I'd prefer to sell before hand so I can enjoy the show (and have a little extra cash in my pocket while there).
