Well I had my first tree fall a couple of hours ago. It was about a 110 foot pine. Luckily it didn't fall towards the house but did catch a corner of my detached garage. It sounded like a bomb going off in the back yard.

The insurance lady said she saw reports of 75 mph wind gust. I've been listening to the scanner(between power outages) and the fire dept and electric guys are having a busy night.

Tomorrow I'll get started on next years firewood.

Yup, crazy wind around here, too. No big trees to do any harm in my neighborhood, though. Just without power most of the evening so no complaints.

Glad to hear nobody got hurt, Kauf!

Hey you should salvage some of that wood for a sound board! Even if it sounded like crap, it would be a fun wallhanger with a heck of a history behind it!

I'm starting to get a complex. I moved here this spring, and so far we've had the worst weather reported since...... wait for it... since the last time I lived in Washington in the late 80's.

Well, too bad... ya can't get rid of me that easily.

In the words of the man who was watching his retirement dream home float down the river last month... "It's just mother nature... whatcha gonna do?"

hope everyone stays safe.

Out of curiosity, how big around is a 110 year old pine? I've got a couple of, oh, 50 footers in my back yard, but they're Red Pine, so they're not terribly big around.

I'm told that an old hickory tree standing alongside General Stonewall Jackson's grave blew down in a hurricane or tropical storm, then was cut up and used to make a limited run of "Old Hickory" Les Paul guitars by Gibson. How's that for bridging the gap between an OT subject and guitars? In fact, a friend and fellow OFCer has one for sale.

My daughter never made it here from Portland last night. Her flight was cancelled due to bad weather. The next available flight is tomorrow, so they routed her up to Seattle, down to San Jose and over to Boise. It will take her almost 24 hours for a one hour flight or a 7 hour drive. That's why I like driving.

Frank Untermyer up at the Factory is VERY much involved with local environmental/conservation programs.

When a Historic sycamore tree lost a major bough in a storm, Frank had the wood brought to the Factory and had one custom-built Elite made entirely out of the sycamore
(naturally, excluding the bowl, frets, hardware, etc.).

I'm not positive, but I believe it was auctioned-off to raise money for a local environmental conservation fund.

The guitar is VERY pretty!
I've got some pics "somewhere" . . . I'll try t'dig some up.

(How's THAT for "On-Topic"?? . . . .

. . . did I do good, Brad??? . . . huh? . . huh?? . . . did I??? . . . . .

There was an article on the Ovation website about it.

We'll give Cliff 2 points for his effort, anyway.

We didn't have any trees come down this time, but we've been without power since 8:30 last night.

A few years ago when we lived out in the woods the neighbor to our south clearcut his 70 year old stand of firs and replanted. 2 weeks later we had a strong windstorm from the south. We laid in bed that night listening and counted 24 of our own big trees along that property line come down. They'd always been protected from that side. What a mess the next day.

The guy said to go ahead and clean up. I took some pictures for him. There wasn't a whole lot of damage.

Once I started driving around town it looked like a war zone with all the trees and debris everywhere. The guy across the street had a big tree fall through the middle of his new nice boat. I guess he'll get another new nice boat.

I'm suprised we still have power. Lots of folks don't.

Fortunately, doesn't sound as bad as the Columbus Day Storm in 1962. Believe about 50 died. We had a filbert orchard nearby, filberts picked up by the wind hit the windows, drove some of the shards through a wood door on the otherside of the living room. Amazing to see the new barns laid flat, the old barns were drafty enough and they stayed standing.

Hope anyone up north came out all right.

I clearly remember that storm, Tony. Hurricane strength. Only poor old Jack Capell saw it coming and nobody took him seriously.
Watched the willow tree across the street come down straight towards our house and had barbecued bacon, eggs and toast for breakfast the next day.

Pheeew! Internets back up!

Wind Storm Observations:

Had internet withdrawal so I called Al on the telephone and got my fix. Didn't go to work since the power was out and there was a lot of debris to clean up and drain/gutter issues. Power came back for dinner and the Internet just a bit ago.

Major power lines took most of the County out and I believe a lot of my Neighbors missed their morning cup of coffee. Went into the local Safeway which had a generator and saw 100 foot line at the Starbucks counter!

Fortunately, we have a bit of protection over here in Yakima- The Cascades. We still had some 45-50 mph gusts, power out about 15 minutes, but good, otherwise. Actually, as a devoted & incorrigible bottomfeeder/scrounger, I was kinda keeping watch for some big pieces of wood to salvage. Probably shoulda headed toward the mountains, though. Some pretty good stands of spruce up there. Shut down a bunch of bridges in Seattle, and closed Snoqualmie Pass- westbound several hours.
Heck, they even sent Jim Cantore from The Weather Channel out here!
Heard on NPR that the only place in Lincoln City (Oregon Coast) with power was the Chinook Winds Casino. Go figure.....

My daughter took 22 hours to get from Portland to here. They routed her to Seattle, which was worse. She had to vacate the airport at 2AM because the wind was breaking the windows. Then they flew her to San Jose and then here.
My brother lives at the top of a hill near the Washington Square mall in Portland. He just sent a couple of pictures of huge trees down in his front yard. He didn't say anything about damage. The trees in the pictures were only about a foot in diameter. He's got a 3 footer in his front yard.
