Location: south east Michigan | This has been a big debate here. Now with the new contour bowl there will be more grist for the discussion mill.
When I purchased my first Ovation in '70 I didn't have a choice. Deep was the only bowl availible. When I bought my second Ovation last year I made my choice strictly by the unplugged sound. I now have two deep bowl Ovations.
You'll get some more feedback here. I don't have a strong opinion...I just call 'em as I see 'em. In the end it's like chicken soup... It couldn't hurt. (Am I the only one who has heard that old saying?) |

Location: Canton (Detroit), MI | YES, THERE IS A DIFFERENCE playing unplugged. I own four mid-bowls, three deep-bowls(all non-cutaway). The deep-bowls have more low-end. If low-end is what you what, then deep-bowl is your choice. If you want a more balanced sound, then you would prefer mid-bowl.

Location: SoCal | When Ovation first came out with the shallow bowls, you could tell a big difference. In the late 90's when Ovation reintroduced what was now called the "mid depth" bowl, you could still tell a difference.
Comparing an LX to an older deep bowl, there's a big difference but it's mostly due to the bracing, not the bowl depth.
What you really need to do is to compare a comparably braced contoured bowl and mid depth bowl. In other words, a 2005 Collectors and an LX Legend. And I doubt if many people have done that. Quite frankly, at the NAMM show, I didn't think to do it, and with all the noise at the show, couldn't have done a good and fair comparison.
A long way of saying, with the older models, yeah you could tell the difference, but with the newer models, I don't know yet. |

Location: Canton (Detroit), MI | Paul M., I have played both the Al DiMeola Custom Legend and the Legend LX (multiples of each, in fact) unplugged and there IS a difference. The deep-bowl AD still has more low-end and depth. You can tell.
Haven't had a chance at a 2005 Collectors' yet....I will if it's still at Elderly next time I'm there......

Location: SoCal | Roger, the ADII has the original A bracing pattern. You're still comparing apples and oranges.
Temp's point about difference not necessarily being better is also very important. Different sounds, different feels. Pick the one that works best. |

The only way to make a fair comparison is to find a Glen Campbell Artist from about 1982, after it went to the A bracing, and compare it to a Legend of the same vintage.
Or, as I said earlier, compare a 2005 Collectors to a Legend LX. |

| I would consider using different string guages for a more balanced sound on the deep bowl, a lot of possibilities there, depending on the bracings/tops...

Location: Los Angeles, CA | Thanks for the responses, guys. Now how about Adamas vs. Adamas, mid vs. deep? I've been eying some pretty textured tops at Al's website, but he told me they're all mid-depth. If I want deep I'll have to shell out for the reissues. |

okay, here's the joke...find a guitar store where you can play the similar style (cutaway/non-cutaway, playing position) where you can compare the recent offerings (CL, LX, contoured bowl, shallow/mid/deep, pre-amp) as well as the older ones.
gee, I guess that's sad, no humor in that situation. guess "ebee" could drive down one afternoon...last time Dan and Rudy were here, felt like a guitar salesman...take one down, play, take another down, play... |

Offered to clean up and adjust a friends Yamaha Box Guitar. Felt really bad for him having to tolerate the high action and such. Had to take the truss rod to the "if-it-breaks-I'll-buy-him-an-Ovation" point. When he came over to retrieve it I asked him if he would like to do a little "guitar tasting"!
At the time I had the 1112, 1615, 1778LX and a Viper.
That's the beauty of Jam Sessions, you get to hear different styles and flavors. Nothing else like it! |
