I have no idea WTF is going on. I've been through 6 sets of strings trying to string up my 1997C. Every time i bring the high E string (.012) to pitch the windings at the ball end unravel and POP!

D'Adds EJ-16's. Ball is aligned so the hole is parallel to the bridge and fits snuggly in the slot.

Any ideas?

(mumble mumble freaking pinless bridges mumble mumble never liked those damn things mumble mumble gotta get that McCollum or a Collings or a Santa Cruz mumble mumble)

Try Dean Marleys and return the D'adds. Sounds like a bad lot.

You've got a bad batch of strings. There's nothing in the bridge that could cause the windings at the ball to unravel. Try putting the B string in the high E hole. I'll bet it does not unwind. If that's the case the problem is the strings, not the bridge. Dave

Agreed. Sounds like a bad lot. I've had this happen 2-3 times in the last year, but never for the 30 years before that. Strange....

Hmmm, perhaps that's it. I buy my string in large blocks (20 sets at a time) from Musicians Friend when they go on sale. I can't remember when i got these.

I'll try another brand Thursday and see if that's it.

Thanks -- never thought the strings could be the problem. Too pissed off to think clearly i guess.

I'll be damned it happened to someone else too.
I had a problem with some of the fairly expensive Elixer Stings. I emailed them my complaint told tham they owed me 4 high E strings and one set of #11's they sent me a pack of high E's and one pack of 11's in two or three days a quick note and I was amazed and now a life long customer.

String tubes won't help if you have defective strings.

i had a 3 packs of D-add EXP .10 - .47 strings with bad B strings (they were all out of tune) and since then i've stopped buying D'addario strings.
i've switched to Rotosound and i'm very pleased. I'm changing strings twice a month in a guitar and it'se enough. When i was playing on "normal" D-addario strings lose their "colour" of sound in 3-4 days.

You can put an old string through all the balls to align them and that will rest right up against the string tubes and help take some of the load.

You have to get the model that ends in "-E." The "E" means "exemptions" (or maybe "exceptions"). That's what the guy at Guitarget told me.

I got some D'Addario's that were totally missing the high e strings, but Shoreline Music made it right, outta their pocket.

I just was installing a set of Adamas 1212's, and the D octave string was too short for a slothead, and probably anything else too. So I had to scrounge-up a similar gauge string outta my junk drawer... (now the little ball on the end don't match)

Wasn't Major Frustration a character in a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle episode?

Yep that was it -- probably. I found a couple of sets from an older batch at the bottom of the string box and it tuned up fine!

Thanks.

Definitely a bad string!

I've never even heard of a string unraveling at the ball end but have never used anything other than Adamas, and now Elixir strings.
