Hi Guys,

Unfortunately I have never owned an ovation, I've been playing guitar for nearly 6 years now and I really would like to be the proud owner of one!

The problem is I have champagne taste and lemonade money! So as I cant afford to splash out on a brand new legend, ebay looks like the only place I'll pick up any form of ovation for a reasonable (ish!) price

So this leads me to my next question, and hopefully you guys can enlighten me...

What model ovation is this, and is it worth bidding on!?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ovation-6-string-acoustic-electric-Black_W0QQ...

The guy selling it has no idea, therefore I thought you guys might be able to shed some light upon my decision to bid!

It ends very soon so I hope some kind person can give me a quick response.

Cheers!

It's an older Celebrity model. Leave it.

Either of these would be worth a bid

Well, I'm stumped; it looks like a Legend but the two plastic knobber electronics is something I have not seen. For the money, I don't think you could go wrong...I did laugh at this sellers obvious dislike for Ovation in general..."can only be played standing up...how funny...thats what a STRAP is for dude! A case would surely help protect if it needs to be shipped, so ask him. But, let me welcome you to the club and encourage you to take some time getting to know the site and check out the posts; we're a diverse group and have diverse opinions but we try to keep it together for the love of the Ovation guitar we all share (well, most of us anyway)...
Blessings...

American made Ovations come up frequently on ebay for reasonable prices. Pass on the Celebritys, Ultras, and Applauses.

Welcome. You might note that one of those guitars has a super shallow bowl, and the other a deep bowl, so whether you're playing mostly plugged or unplugged will be a consideration/

As I already have an acoustic Im fairly happy with I did want the ovation so it could be plugged in....but not all the time, so I guess ideally I should be looking at mid-depth?

Cheers for that, I hadnt really taken the depth of the guitar in to full consideration, Im glad I put up this post now! lol

I personally think you would be happier with a deep bowl. The sound quality and unplugged volume will match or exceed many other high-dollar instruments. With that said ...I DID have a mid depth Custom Legend that had a great sound also.

Paul gave you a couple of very different Ovations. If you primarily strum, especially with barre chords, you would probably prefer the Custom Balladeer. I have one of those that Paul used to own and it is stellar, even with a shallow bowl.
If you play open chords or fingerpick, you would probably prefer the Folklore. It has a little wider and flatter neck, so it is easier to hit the individual notes, but somewhat harder to get a clean barre chord.
I agree with the prior comments, except that there are new Ultras out that seem to be good.

Bear in mind that our new fiend Silent is in the UK. I didn't pick these guitars at random, they are the only 2 USA-made Ovations currently on UK Ebay at low values. The only other bargain is a Viper EA65 at £495 BIN, which is a steal over here, but as the Viper is a relatively specialist instrument I didn't include it.

I have a friend who knows someone who's selling a ovation legend thats 15 years old with an ovation hard case for £200. Apparently its in good condition however it has a 0.5cm crack on the edge of the soundhole.

I have a picture of it (which I dont know how to attach to this message!?) But thats all the info I have on it.

If I find out more info on it then I'll ask you guys for ur opinion, I've gotta travel to go try it/pick it up but surely I cant go much wrong for £200!?

Thanks for that, ok here is a pic

Dunno if that will help, like I said its around 15 years old, apparently this guys dad has handed it down to him.

Is it worth buying for around £200 (I'll probly knock him down a little) aslong as this crack isnt too serious?

Thanks again guys

sorry, I hosed that up. the space in your filename breaks the image tagging in the forums. I've reposted your pic by replacing the space with a "%20" which is how to represent a space in a URL.

Seems like a nice guitar. Paul or another UK-type would have to comment on whether the price is competitive in your geography.

From the sounds of it the crack may be in the plastic rosette? If so, that's entirely cosmetic.
