Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR | I just watched this disturbing movie about the music industry.
Of course they talked bad about the record label's corporate culture and Clear Channel.
They talk to Bonnie Raitt and Erykah Badu a bunch. Plus Elvis Costello and Eric Clapton and others.
There is a piece in there where they just Grab this teenage girl outta nowhere, grab a songwriter, and create a passible MTV persona in a coupla hours. Talk about looks as opposed to talent.
One dude keeps mentioning how Ray Charles or Stevie Wonder wouldn't even get a shot nowadays.
I remember an old-style radio DJ commenting that with the new 'Playlist' radio, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pink Floyd, Joe Cocker, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, (name a band) wouldn't even get a shot nowadays because they wouldn't know which format to fit them into...
Scary...

Location: Tennessee | The "music industry" is dying and close to flatlining. Real music is getting into the mainstream in other ways now. In my opinion, the music industry committed suicide. No different thatn most of our car companies. My kids get their exposure to new music and new artists in far different ways than we did. The only genre still left that is controlled by the corporate music people is modern country or whatever they call it. Everything else is all about the independents and self promotion. |

| You forgot Josh Groban. I differ with your difference. There are simply too few of these kinds of acts getting any significant attention. I am, however, biased. My favorite XM channel is the Sinatra Channel. |

| Agreed. The music business is doing just fine given the economy. Much of its product is not to my taste, but I would decline the office of "Minister of Music" were it offered.
The music industry, like all industries, should be market driven. |

Location: Utah | It seems that the business model is changing in ways that we don't really comprehend yet. The old record contract doesn't make any sense at all. Touring doesn't pay what it used to. Local gigging bands can't make a decent living. New artists have to do all their own promotion and bring their audience to the venue.
Partly it is the age 21 drinking age and a general reduction in going to bars. The big country dance bars of the 80's are long gone, and the corner bar doesn't pay a band $500 to play on Saturday night.
Yet there is music everywhere. There is a big demand for music on mp3 players and in tv show sound tracks.
Someone just has to figure out how to convert the new reality into a living wage for musicians. |
