I recently came into possession of a pair of Peavey 480 mics at a very reasonable cost ($0.00). The problem is, they don't work. (Hence the bargain. ;) ) The good news is, the problem is pretty straighforward---
I tried a little home repair, but these wires are so thin and the solder points so tight that I just can't bullseye a new connection. (I need glasses. I'm too stubborn/deep in denial to get my eyes tested. Stupid middle age.) I've never mucked about with mics before other than plugging them in, so I'm fishing for suggestions; what's the most reasonable way to repair something like this? |

Location: Ohio | Get your glasses, or someone with good eyesight. Put a little flux on the wire, and a really fine time iron. One of the induction type irons works great. No heat at the tip till you touch the solder pad.

Location: Denver, CO | I would take them to a local electrical repair shop and pay the twenty bucks per mic. (or so) to have it done right. It will be cheaper than your (inevitable) eye exam. |

Yep... what a group indeed... You found someone to enable your vanity and put your health and likely other peoples lives at risk (I assume you drive).. what a friend indeed.
FWIW, I hate wearing glasses so much (not vanity, function) that I seriously considered gouging out my eyes and being done with it. And yes, the guy that never uses the word hate, just used it. But, I wear them every day.

While I would certainly benefit from reading glasses as I tend to hold my books a little further from from my face than I used to, my distance and depth vision are still plenty sharp. As far as driving goes, I passed my drivers eye exam in March with flying colors...didn't miss a letter. In fact, I didn't miss a letter in the four lines BELOW the line I was asked to read. I can still read interstate signs before my wife can, whose glasses correct her vision to 20/20. I take driving very seriously, especially now that I am responsible for the welfare of three other people who often ride in the same vehicle I am operating.
I'm not very good at soldering. I've done it maybe three times my whole life. After several attempts, I was having no success trying with this little project. And though I have other handyman-type skills, I know nothing of electronics. I made several local calls, and no one seemed very keen on taking my business.
I had pretty much resigned myself to sending them off for repair, but I thought I would ask for advice here because many members are way more up to speed about things like this than I will ever be. It was a music related post as I only want to try and improve my home recording.
I apologize if I inadvertently created some sort of affront for anyone. I try to keep my posts light-hearted for the most part, so I often take jabs at myself when I'm out of my depth about a topic.
Someone here offered to do me a favor and requested to remain anonymous. I'm grateful to them and simply wanted to say so. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Wait till you guys get old. Can't get contacts that will cover all distances, so you have to carry reading glasses or stash them everywhere you might have to read. With the trifocals, you have to keep tilting your head up and down or taking the glasses off to read the really small stuff.
The people who make eyedrops and contact cleaner don't seem to realize they make them for people with bad eyesight, so you put the wrong stuff in your eyes and scratch them trying to get your contacts out. Just sign me up for a Fidelco dog. |

Location: Utah | Patch, you don't need reading glasses until your arms are too short.
Every time I've given in and gone the next step up in correction it has been a relief. Reading is easy with cheap drugstore reading glasses. Bifocals make driving and flying so much nicer. I've even started playing guitar with reading glasses on, and it makes a difference. |

| Lasik. No more glasses, no more contact lenses, no more bifocals.
I was a skeptic when it was being developed, even involved in some of the early work on looking at fibrosis and scarring after treatment. It's proven safe and effective. Just find a competent doc. |

Location: Latitude 39.56819, Longitude -105.080066 | It has been discovered that RK tends to continue correcting for the life of the recipient (whether correction is needed or not)......so after 15 years of RK bliss my distance vision has gone the opposite direction.
Also, RK doesn't allow continuous surgeries like Lasik so my only option (beside progressive glasses) is to get inserts.....not a bad option, just damn expensive! |

Location: Bluffton, SC | I had Lasik about 10 years ago and can still see better than 20/20 as long as it's beyond arms length. Get it inside of that and I'm useless without cheaters (and that's seemingly getting worse daily) but they told me that when I had the surgery. |
