mr. brown handed me my new, but 30 year old guitar about two hours ago. we are acquainted and so he asked me if he could see the guitar also. we opened the box out in the driveway and both of us said "wow!" at the same time. brought it in quickly as the rain has been frequent today. cleaned 'er up, replaced those un-accentuating pearloid tuners with some gold minis from my 1688, until i can afford a set of walnuts from paul, and restrung 'er with some medium elixirs.
overall the guitar is in great condition for its age. the tone knob marker is broken, there is a slight lifting of the epaulet between two holes on the treble side, almost like a crack in the mylar but the top underneath it is secure. and a bit of scarring on the "manhole cover". the neck is magnificent as are the fretboard and fretwires.
the action is as low without buzzing as i have ever seen on an acoustic guitar, even lower than on my EA-68! there is one thin white taper under the saddle, no shims. it plays perfectly and though it is not a wide neck, it is extremely comfortable and just fine for fingerstyle also. i think my 1537 with airlocks on the treble side, outshines the 1687. when the airlocks are removed from the 1537, the 1687 sounds better. and, interestingly, the airlocks diminish the sound of the adamas rather than enhance it as they do on the 1537. and now, for your viewing pleasure:

Gee, that's a nice quilt!!!

Oh, by the way, Randy, that is a sweetheart guitar! You lucky dog, you've done it again. Congrats, it's found a great home, for sure. :)

thanks stephen and dave. that quilt, which my mama made for me and my bride, should be familiar. i've taken pics of several guitars on it. i know, damon, they would look nicer on a solid red blanket. i'm gonna have to go to wally world and get one...

by the way, this guitar is surprisingly very light in weight.

Beautiful guitar. The wear on the top just enhances the look.

Randy, I think I've got a couple of extra knobs if you need one. Shoot me an email and let me know....

thank you one and all!

paul, the knobs are fine. one of the markers is broken. look at the tone knob above and see the position marker under it... that can probably be replaced. i'll email jb. thanks for the kind offer though. taylors don't use knobs like these so you probably don't need 'em anyway.

Very Nice Indeed. I am facinated with the color. Most of the #9's I have seen are all brown, some slightly lighter or darker than another but this one seems to have the blue towards the center. ? There all great.
Enjoy

Very nice guitar, Randy!

Seems that poo burst guitars get the respect they deserve, at last.

Congrats,
Kurt

i have recently been in contact with the man in france who "won" the eBay auction on this guitar before it re-listed to the auction i won. the seller did not want to ship overseas.
i was unashamedly and blatantly attempting to make a profit by offering it to the guy at his closing bid plus shipping to france and paypal fees. don't get me wrong. the guitar is fabulous but i recognized a viable, if not "immature" opportunity to reduce my debt load. anyway, the point is this: the man, whose name is gilles, owns several fine guitars including 2 #47RI's (#s 48 and 53), a W597 cobalt, a CL sunburst, martins, taylors and larrivees AND a takamine EF75! i informed him of this forum, jerome's ovation tribute site and the tak forum, neither of which he was aware of. now, he is quite excited to know about all of this and spent some time perusing last evening. he saw my sig line here and discovered i had an EF75. that prompted him to send me a message describing his guitars. i think we will hear from gilles directly soon.

oh, almost forgot...the 1687-9 is remaining at home with me where it belongs...for now and perhaps for ever.
