Location: Campbell River, British Columbia | Last night I noticed a crack in the soundboard of my Balladeer. It's on the high E string side of the fingerboard about a 1/4 inch away and parallel to the fingerboard. It's 2 or 3 inches long.
At the moment it appears to be in the surface coating only.
How much should I worry? |

Location: Carle Place, NY | Finish cracks effect resale value, but don't effect structural stability or sound. Unless you're planning on selling, there's no cause for worry. |

The truely scary thing about your question, is that, you are asking from a region famous for abundant humidity...
If it follows the grain, I would be concerned. The underlying soundboard might be moving. I'd put a humidifer in it. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | My Country Artist that I got from Portland has one of those on each side. I've seen several that have the finish cracks near the neck, most running from the sound hole. I wondered if it was from pressure or a jolt to the neck. |

After 30 years or so,you'd think this guitar had seen it all. (It has, Rock concerts, dances, coffee houses, road wear and tear) And, except for the bit of bridge that broke off during a particularly retarded onstage stunt I can't quite recall :rolleyes: it's in darned good shape.
It has been a little dry lately, nothing out of the ordinary. I am feeling a little guilty for hanging it facing the wall (it was naughty) but I think I've done that before.
Guess I'll just keep an eye on it for now. Thanks for the input. Maybe I should just buy it a pair of Plumbers Pants. :eek: |

They always jerked up and made a banging noise ... just like the mini-carousel in front of the five-and-dime. Oh well, at least the money wasn't wasted ... I learned many new inventive ways of stringing together a minimum of six cuss words.
Sorry to hear about the damage, fillhixx. Did it happen when the guitar was faced towards the wall, and was the wall an outside wall? It could be temperature related. On the other hand, sounds like the old girl has been through a lot and this might just be another sign of a good life ... the same as the "smile lines" mature women seem to get around their eyes, which I think adds another dimension to their beauty. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Speaking of cracks ... Did anyone watch that super cheezy VH1 reality show the other night called "Surreal Life" ??? I'm embarrased to admit it but I could not turn it off. This house full of B-list celebrities (CC de Ville, George Jefferson, Twany Katane, some stripper, Florence Henderson, etc.) audition these 3 guys to be a new house mate. The one dude does a strip-tease and when he drops his jeans he's wearing this bright yellow bikini bottom. He turns around and the entire back is shit stained. Not just your average residual skids, this was a total load of shit in the shorts. The entire cast of the show freaking died laughing. I shot a mouth full of cheeze-its clear across the room ...
