Location: south east Michigan | Al Green just played a song with Willie Nelson on a TV special. Al played an Ovation and really put it on display. At the rousing gospel type ending, he stopped playing, held up the Ovation by the neck, and displayed every angle to the TV and the crowd.

Location: Charlotte NC | That was pretty cool. How about Willie's guitar? That thing looks as old and worn as he does. That big gaping hole and the strap holding the body to the top are a hoot. Like him, it still get's the job done though. The show is "Willie and Friends" on the USA Network. |

| Willie had some of the worst sounding duets ever on that telecast. I shut it off right before Al green was coming on! |

Location: Vernon, CT | Yeah, it looked like an Ovation Custom Elite but Al Green seemed to be using it as an expensive neck chain half of the time and strummed a "ew"chords. Willie's guitar looked like he might have used it to smash a few IRS agents over the head!! : ) Play on!

Location: Tampa, Florida | To me Al Green's guitar looked like a S778 Elite Special, like I used to have. It had OP24+ electronics, a plain, branded peghead, and seemed to be satin finished. Nothing special (except the name) |

Location: Waurika OK | I have to agree with Englishplayer, some of those duets were pretty bad. Especially the one with Bob D. I usually don't enjoy shows that have a headliner and then tons of guests. If I want to see Willie, then just give me Willie. EC is going to be in Oklahoma City a week from tonight, without all the other great guitar players that are appearing in Dallas. The Ok. City show is the one I would choose.
I do have tickets to see Willie in Wichita Falls the first of next month. I sure hope it is better than the TV show.

I take it you are a Willie Nelson fan. We'll so am I. Maybe gimmick is not the right word, but come on, that guitar has seen better days. It's like going overboard to be rustic. To me guitars have to be in fine repair and well kept. And, namming your guitar after a TV horse, a bit corny for me. |

I understand your opinion. I'm a moderate Willie Nelson fan. I don't know if I even own any of his recordings.
But I respect somebody who's had something and loved it some much that they've kept it going (ask me sometime about a certain old Rx-7). Willie's had that guitar since about 1969 and refuses to part with it. When the IRS came after him, it's the one thing that he hid. It couldn't be replaced.
Stop and think sometime about what you'd carry out of your house (guitar-wise), if you could only carry one load. Makes for an interesting thought.
As to the name Trigger, that is corny. But so is Lucille. |

Paul T., I think, told us what kind of pickup is in that thing, it is not one you buy at Guitar Center, but someone here claimed to have access to some of them. Willie has patched that thing up for years as it has a unique sound that IS Willie. That POS, as has been noted, has probably made Willie 10 great fortunes, and paid off the IRS. It was the featured guitar on "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" and the whole of "Red Headed Stranger". In the 70's when Willie was struggling, we (my wife and I) went to see Jerry Lee Lewis in San Diego and this little guitar player called Willie opened to an appreciative "in crowd" audience and backed Jerry Lee in his set. I remember wondering as a guitar player, how he got so much sound out of what looked like a flat top acoustic guitar. It, of course, was "Trigger" and back then was all in one piece like every other Martin Guitar, sorta like the one Keith Richards played on the show.
That guitar will sell for a small fortune if they don't burn it on Willies pot fueled funeral pyre. |
