Okay does one of the guru's want to take a stab at identifying this mysterious GC-1118.

Mysterious GC-1118 on the bay

It does not have the normal rosette instead having inlaid wood rings and if that is spruce on the top it is the strangest figuring I have ever seen on spruce. Look's very 'lived in' guitar but otherwise very curious.

Ideas?

I kind a like it, except for the high G string.

Almost looks like a walnut top, but maybe somebody just refinished the original top with a dark stain and took off the rosette.

I'll bet it's just a very early model when they were still having trouble making up their minds about what would be standard.

Those tuners...what are they? I've seen them on these old slothead 12's. Are they any good compared to the Schallers on later models?

I'd put my money on a non-factory top replacement.

Top looks like mahogony or koa or something like that. Definately nonoriginal, dodgy s/n too. It looks like a factory replacement top to get the binding and bridge right. What's the service dept have to say about this?

Jephus, that looks like straight grain Koa.

Must be a factory job...has an Ovation bridge.

What's with the ser.#? It doesn't fit into the "Ovation Code".

Tuners are Kluson, standard issue on ovation 12 strings before they started using Schaller, which means it's late 60's early 70's. (My '68 has a rosewood winged bridge and Klusons) Serial number is bogus. The close up of the end of the fingerboard showing the soundhole lip clearly shows a dark stain with a lighter area under the fingerboard, which would suggest stained spruce or similar rather than Koa, mahogany or whatever. Looks a little thin to be solid but the pic resolution isn't good enough to see plys. The Rosette could be a waterslide decal.

I've emailed the seller and he has responded. He does not know what the top is, but is willing to investigate it. I informed him of this discussion.... Maybe he will stop by.

I've had several email exchanges with the seller of this guitar. Preliminarily, it appears to be Solid Koa top. And this guitar was repaired at the factory at one time for a crack in the top... I'm waiting for permission from him to post our emails and I have invited him to join the discussion.
