He is inspiring, no? I think he's proven that simple runs, albeit sometimes at inhuman speeds, sound great.

Don't get me wrong . . .
I've got a lot of respect for Mr. ScratchYerHiney and what he's able to do . . . . for about five minutes . . . then I'm ready to move on to something else.

I had a former brother-in Law that swore by Satriani. To hear him tell it, The guy was GOD!
I never really got into him that much. He's a fine player, just not my cup-of tea! From what i read Not Paul Termplemans either!

I can accept he's not for everyone - he's certainly not God to me either - but he can play, there is no question about that. Guess I've just tried to keep an open mind about harder edged stuff as well as the acoustic, jazz and blues that I've always preferred. No problem - a lot of people didn't appreciate the brilliance of Hendrix either.

Not quite my style but I am absolutely fascinated with his music! Certainly can last a lot more than 5 minutes... This guy is the quickest human I have ever seen on the neck of a guitar! No doubt.

Again I am not a big "Shread Guitar" Fan but I do love to see where these guy's have taken finger speed and the electric sound. It really is amazing how the guitar sounds with these many notes played on them in each measure.

You may not like the style but you have to admit Joe & Steve & Eddie and others have taken human fingers & guitar strings & frets to new levels.

It is NOT difficult to play anelectric guitar that fast. Slap an O in their hands and see how fast/accurate they are and then try and spot anything resembling music when you remove the wall of sound.

Although he's always included in that whole genre, Eddie van Halen is a whole different kettle of fish. EVH is the real deal - and I loathe that kind of music.

While not my cup of tea as i said earlier, i do try to have an open mind to give all kinds of music an open ear. It's been years since i listened to him. I'll definately give him another listen.

When his new Peavey JSX amp head came out, he did a demo video at the NAMM show; played for about 2/3 of the half hour (as I recall; but I'm getting old) promo.

He played a hammer-on classical style piece that was absolutely beautiful and harmonically interesting...so he can go a lot of different places. I'd rather listen to him than to (most of) EVH's stuff (but maybe I just don't care for DLR's screeching...).

Joe's best (most interesting) album (IMHO) is the eponymous album (the one with the mostly black cover).

ditto on the mouth part.

Mark Gilbert is the deputy editor of Jazz Journal and a very good jazz guitarist himself. He wrote:-

"An immensely capable musician, Joe Satriani is a rock guitarist who uses the full resources of the instrument and can out-gun almost any other of the fraternity. Like Yngwie Malamsteen, however, he often appears in need of a more substantial peg on which to hang his hat.
Surfing with the Alien was an entertaing and impressive album from 1986 that fully represents his well-honed skills without the technical overkill of much of his later output."

Basically - he had it and he lost it.

I always get the impression that he's just trying to show off.
