Anyone know what year that Ovation changed from AAA grade tops to AA grade on the Legend series guitars? Thanks

Mike

The AAA feature on the Custom Legend, was one of the upgrages that distinguished it from the Legend. The Legends were always AA. But, us factory attendees know that: Just because its AAA, that doesn't mean that the guitar will sound better or louder.

And also keep in mind that they don't get in a pallet of AAA tops, a seperate pallet of AA's and so on. I had a CL 12 made back in '02 and the way it was explained to me, they look through what they have stacked up and pick out what looks like an exceptional piece. Kim was telling me a few years back they built a lot of Baladeers with bear claw tops simply because they had A LOT of them. So it's kind of a subjective thing.

I disagree about the Legend always having AA grade tops. I know for sure that my 1981 Legend has AAA, and the 1980-82 catalog states this in their specs. Most guitar makers grade their tops for cosmetic purposes only, and not for tone, so I agree that it probably won't make any difference anyway, but I remember reading somewhere about the change from AAA to AA for the Legend series guitars.

The best looking wood in the storage area is called AAA. Until, something better comes along and then it's renamed AA. Dave

well, guess I can only judge based on what I have played...AAA on the Custom Legends (1619,1658, 1659, 6759, 1719-30CM), 1769 ADII, 6759 (AAA cedar), 1127, 2005 Collector's, and 1537.

yes, there can be a good sounding AA but so far I haven't seen one better than the AAA.

The catagories are based on what is there and loosely compared to an "industry standard". Over time this "Ind Std" will vary. A AAA top today might not be as "good(however you want to define THAT term)" as it was 10-20 years ago. And then it depends what the sourses of supply are doing, it could be much better today than some years ago, I'm thinking all wood supplies, not just spruce.

A few things are for sure. Wood is a shrinking comodity, there's plenty there now but it's on the down slide. The use of composits has just put a small scratch in the surface of what can be done. Guitar players are VERY slow to change so the demand for wood will continue to be strong. Development of composits is expensive so progress is slow. I believe that it will get there eventually. Brazilian Fibreglass and Amazon grafite give the best sound. Nuff said.

****Q.

As guitar players I don't think we should feel guilty that we are consuming the worlds supply of wood. Even those heathens among us that buy all wood guitars, burn in hell. The daily consumption of wood for the manufacturing of guitars is miniscule compared to the production of chop sticks.
