I thinking about trying a set of Exiler Nanoweb Extra Lights on my 2005 Collectors. Has anyone tried these yet? I've got 12's on now, but was wondering how much top vibration I will loose going down to the 11's.

Never used Elixirs but I have been using webstrings 11's. Funny you should ask, I'm going the other way, I'm looking at going to 13's (medium's) for two reasons. First I desperately want to impress Moody, p.i. and I think this is the way to big burly fret board fingers. Second, I'm going to lower the action a bit and hope going to the med's will ameliorate any tone issues there. I also notice a certain tinniness and a very treble orienteed tone with the lighter gauge strings. Sooooooo, I'll do mine and let you know if it was a good idea, you do yours and let me know if you think it was a good idea.

I think it would be HARD to make this guitar sound bad... Reguardless of what strings it's wearing!

Custom Light Elixir Nanowebs (.011-.052) are my favorite strings. I buy them on Ebay - 3 sets are about $36 with shipping. Shipping to Alaska might be a bit more. Great tone and worth the price. IMHO Webstrings are sh*t. The difference in acoustic tone between the 11's and 12's with Elixirs is very slight to my ear. I find that you have to go the the medium/light gauge (.012 - .056) to notice any real improved tone over the 11's.

BTW-Elixir Extra Lights are 10's.

Chat Man I am using the Adamas Med's now 56-13 They are just about the same as I remember my Martin Medium strings sounding when new. I find I get a very "BIG" sound out of my Ovation with these gauge strings. Once you get used to playing with them you'll not be happy with the lighter gauge strings again. I would like to try an even heavier set just to see what this guitar sounds like but I am very leary of what damage they can do if left tight for any time.
Buy the way I am not sure just how much this may help but I rest better when I detune my "G" string and/or "D" string when I hang it up for the night. I find, now that I am practicing on the bass a lot, The neck stays spot-on straight when I let it rest like this. It is a quick retune and ready to go.
I do this for all of basses and guitars now.

Enjoy.

I think if the guitar is built properly, then detuning a few or all strings is unneccesary, but if detuning makes you sleep better at night, then it is worth doing.

My fetish is cleaning the guitar when I am through playing it. I probably have 7-8 cleaning/polishing cloths laying around on various racks and amps. When I get through playing a guitar, I have to throughly wipe down the strings, fretboard, and body......otherwise I end up getting out of bed hours later to do it.

Like I said.....whatever helps you sleep at night!

Well I thought I would put a set of the Nano 11'S on my old Balladeer since it needed strings anyway and am not sure I will put them on the 2005 now. I think I lost quite a bit of tone going from the 12's to the 11's. I really didn't think that I would hear much difference between the 2, but I think I do. Not only that, but I broke my first string ever while stringing it up (high E). I'm going to play it for a while then decide if I will go with the 11's on the 2005. I've always liked the 12's, I just wanted to seee, hear, and feel the difference. The jury is still out but I'm leaning toward going back to the 12's.

As most of you probably already know...Moody had my 2005 for about a month and put mediums on it.

Can't really tell you whether it is an improvement because the guitar was great with the factory strings. However, it is great with the mediums, not better or worse, just different. Handles the mediums well.

Booming would be appropriate. Projection like an Adamas would be appropriate (and from a center hole). Different flavor of ice cream.

I do a lot of finger pickin' and the mediums are great.

Would recommend experimenting with heavier, not lighter. Either with the equiv of the 1818E or mediums, pick your flavor and enjoy.

I'm really upset I didn't buy that 1537 from Stephent28, now. Wakes up in the middle of the night because he forgot to clean his guitar. Of course, he might have worn the finish off from cleaning it so much.

Hmmmmm, now why is BluesSailor smiling?

Could it be because his 1537 is heading out to its new home tomorrow?  :D

So I put mediums on the 2005 ES last night. The difference was dramatic. I recall when I went from 12's to 11's the tone became decidedly tinny. Lots of high overtones almost like buzzing in tune. Now it sounds like someone cranked the tone control over to bass. It kind of sounds like my Adamas, has good sustain and pleasant tone. The real change is in how it feels to play.

With the light strings I found I would tend to push the strings around as I fretted them. This would cause the obvious intonation issues but a second, less obvious result was that I had difficulty not deadening adjacent strings when playing fingerstyle. It gives one the impression that the neck is too narrow but in reality you are simply pushing the strings together when you shouldn't. At first blush, I find the mediums easier to play. I like the tone. I do not find the fretting effort to be terribly different from before. While the strings require more pressure, the fact that they stay put means the pressure I apply is more effective. All in all, not terrible.
Not sure how bends would woirk with this weight, I'm just glad to get proper notes in proper tune. I have pretty light weight goals to date.

On a tangent, if you are curious about how different weight strings might feel/sound/play, I have to reccommend WebStrings. They sound good and for under $3/set (5 set mix & match price) you could try them for one night and if you didn't like them, you wouldn't be out much.

I'm not surprised the mediums worked well. Thicker strings seem to bring out the best acoustic sound in deep bowl Ovations from my experience.
