Having just gotten my 6778 thanks to the advice on here, I now am trying to tune it. Supposedly when I get the proper tension on the string, the readout is supposed to show a diamond. But on most of the strings, it moves directly from showing a down or up arrow to the up or down, with no diamond in between. And sometimes it shows a "6".

What am I doing wrong?

I'm not familiar with the exact tuner on your guitar, but electronic tuners tend to behave that way, if there's only led's displaying when you hit the exact note. What can be wrong is low battery, which would be my first check when a preamp is behaving strange. Try to change the battery and see if that helps! ;)

Tune till there's nothing in the middle. the arrows tell you if you're sharp or flat, showing nothing you're OK.

I noticed on my Adamas MEII - it will go up and down until I slowly turn the machine head - very slowly - then I get the diamond.

I am also incredible impatient - I found this link where someone actually recorded the tuning of a 12 string - much less frustrating if you are in a hurry.

Beal, the vip has the arrows that disappear, but the OP pro has the arrows that make a diamond when in tune. But of course, I know you knew that... :D

It's been 23 minutes. I'm guessing it's tuned and you're hacking away on your "new" O. What a great feeling.

Rupe, in your first post you said you don't know much about playing guitar so forgive me if I overshoot this.

The seller may have shipped the guitar to you "detuned" meaning it may be wayyyy out of tune to begin with.

The "6" you are seeing I believe means it's found the G note. Depending on which string you're tuning, that could be good or bad!

Concentrate on getting the low E string (closet to your face when you hold the guitar in playing position) tuned properly. Turn the tuning peg very slowly and always work your way "up" to pitch.. meaning if you overshoot the proper pitch, go back down and tune up to it again. When it proper tune, the Display should show an E and a diamond.

This page has an audio file of how that low E string should sound.

Next use this relative tuning method to get the rest of your strings "in the ballpark" .. then you can use the onboard tuner again to fine tune each string. The onboard tuners are great if you're already in the ballpark. If the guitar has been detuned or the strings are way off to begin with, the tuner is no help. That's what I think is happening for you.

Hope that helps. If I'm telling you something you already know and missing your real question, my apologies.

No, I didn't know that, all these are after my time.

I've got one of these tuners on the 2080D and it sucks cause you have to be plugged in for it to work, but then if you're plugged in and use it and forget to turn it off there's no sound. Who thinks this shit up anyway? The Tak cool tube preamp tuner is much better. Push a button, it works, push again, it's off. Forget to turn it off, it does it by itself. Now that's the way things should work.

Yeah Bill, the op pro works like it should. You don't have to have the "dummy plug" to make it work and it shuts itself off after a while. Ah, the miracles of modern technology....

Are you saying that the string goes from one side to the other of being in tune, but never seems to hit the center?

If that is the case it could be one of several things.

One, it could be old strings.

Two, it could be brand new strings that need to stretch a bit.

Three, it could be the strings binding on the nut. If the string binds as you turn the peg, the pitch won't change until suddenly it pings as it slips, and then it changes pitch more than you wanted. One cure is to put a little bit of powdered graphite under the string in the slot of the nut.

Try tuning it by ear, and then go back with the tuner.

Thanks dvd, no it's not too elementary. I know nothing except I like Ovation and I like the one I bought!

I replaced the battery, and still have the same problem. It either shows an up arrow or a down arrow but I can't get it to the diamond or blank.

I do have an old Seiko tuning meter I can try and see how that works. I was hoping I wouldn't need that anymore.

Maybe I should just go get those Martin strings installed and let GC tune the thing for me.

I'm such a newbie!
