Can we add a "Kidney" Preamp FAQ?

I'm willing to put such a thing together, but I don't know even half the facts about the darn things. Below is an example list (which is almost certainly inaccurate) with a few preamps to illustrate what I had in mind. Any thoughts/input?

Also, all of these preamps will function in an OP-Pro can... BUT! I know that an OP-Pro will NOT function correctly in an iDea can. (also, the battery on the OP-Pro will drain when used with an iDea can) How about the OP-2B, OP-10, OP-11, OP-20, OP-30, OP-40, and OP-50? Edited by Old Man Arthur 2017-04-14 9:33 PM

I only intended the above "chart" to be a starting point for discussion, not a complete list (although a complete list would be the ultimate goal.) If others agree that some sort of chart would be useful (and contribute what they know) (and if Miles &/or Al have no objections), then this thread could eventually be the source of a more complete and accurate pre-amp FAQ/chart. My initial objective was simply to ask if anyone besides me thinks it might be useful to compile such a chart/list in one place for future reference.

While we are at it information on the Optima, OP-X, OP-24, OP-24+, OP-24E, and all that other stuff would be good. Including how to take-apart those preamps and safely remove them from the bowl.

Joined: December 2008 Posts: 1453 Location: Texas | it might be simpler to create two separate reference charts: - One for the older preamps that don't pop-out of a "can" - and another for the "kidney" preamps, since some of those can easily be swapped between guitars. Does anyone know how many different "cans" there are (and what preamps work with which.) Is there a simple way to visually differentiate the cans (without having to remove them from the guitar?) (I freely admit that I don't know half of what I'd need to create a complete list. It was a search for such information that gave me the idea in the first place.)

Is there a simple way to visually differentiate the cans (without having to remove them from the guitar?) All of the OP-Pro style cans have 8 contact points. The silver OP-20/30/40 cans have 6 contact points (some say 7). But the OP-30 style of contacts are staggered, whereas the OP-Pro style is 8 in a block. You generally would only encounter an iDea can on an iDea guitar... Or a guitar that has a little Aux jack on the back of it. Otherwise and iDea module will work in an OP-Pro can... Unless you need the Aux jack.

Ovation has released many different preamps throughout the years. I threw together a Google Doc that anyone can edit; perhaps there is enough interest to get it done. You'll be free of all the time and hassle and be VERY happy with the end result. I will tell you that I did my own install on my Adamas, and it was NOT easy making a cutting template out of silicone, getting correct placement, cutting with a dremel was pretty easy. In the end I DID save some cash. Im actually getting ready to do the same for my 1537. But THIS time I have the Adamas right here to use for measurement and placement. I'll just make a paper template, mark it up and cut, pull the old stuff and replace with new.

Perhaps the best and most sensible idea. I've further worked on the preamps chart and made it more readable. Not certain yet what preamp specs would be useful to have in there.

For what I need playing plugged in every week, and wanting to get the best plugged in natural sound, without sending it to some electronics "guru", i felt this would be my best option. I already installed one in my 1581, so the mod will be an easier repeat. I will then be waiting around for an opportunity to snag a VIP 5 later as an alternative drop-in to get that natural mic'd sound when needed.

Joined: December 2015 Posts: 287 Location: Katmandu | I finished gathering the available information I had access to and added a couple of the more obscure preamps to the mix. If there be any errors, let me know. Not sure what else would be useful to have in that spreadsheet. Edited by leonardmccoy 2017-04-24 12:59 PM
