Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Easiest is with an In Ear Monitoring system that allows you to use your own headsets. If you just want to use them yourself (not in a band/stage environment) just get some sort of headphone amp and get a feed from you mixer. We used them for rehearsals as getting vocals over the instruments in a small space was a hassle. We has floor and side monitors, but the buds added a clarity that was great.
Ear monitors are great for Live. Pretty much eliminates any chance of feedback issues, everyone gets a mix of exactly what they need to hear, etc... However, if you don't get a soundcheck... things can go pear-shaped rather easily. Just watch any awards show or impromptu performance and inevitably you'll see someone yank them out of their ears at some point. It's usually not because it's too loud or anything, but just that it was likely distracting due to lack of a decent sound-check or the mix changed at some point.
In general, ones that are designed as in-ear monitors, protect your hearing. They quiet down the stage volume, and give you a nice clear monitor signal. |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Not that specific unit, but I have used a Roll's headphone amp. I have on in my kit and use it a lot and it looks like just a different version of the one above, just with one input channel. I'm sure it would be fine. Rolls stuff tends to be pretty solid. I akin Rolls to Peavey where it might not have any resale value but it's going to be as good if not better than anything at the same price point and it's gonna work when you need it and last forever. |

I've been using them in my studio just plugged into the mixer, but I'm more interested to know how to use them in a "band/stage environment"? Are they hard wired, so you're dragging 2 cables around, or wireless? I would imagine wireless would be pretty expensive? |

At the time (15 years ago) wireless wasn't quite there yet. I ran a wireless headset mic, but wired guitar. |

Location: Sunshine State, Australia | I've got a reasonably good quality clip-on stereo mic. If I had that clipped on my collar and plugged into a small portable amp, say, clipped to my belt, then plug in the etymotics.
Does such a portable amp exist?
Would something like that work...? |

Looks like he never made one in the end, but bought one from eBay. So did I... http://myworld.ebay.com/juice2214/ (same seller he mentions in the thread) I'm not really sure what I'm trying to achieve Miles. I jam with a few other guys and can't hear my own voice well enough in the mix. We don't have a PA, everyone's playing through their own amp. I'm just looking at cheap options so I can monitor myself.

Sounds like you have the right idea. And I'm probably gonne buy one too. They are just too cool to pass on for the price. If you guys are not singing through a pa, then this I suspect is a great simple option. The lav mic with your ear buds is simple enough and you won't need much volume. For the price it's certainly worth a try. |
