I just found this while searching the google groups:

In article <4plr1i$...@news.injersey.com>, Don Bartecsko says:

I've made this sort of comment before and do understand that many people
feel Ovations are just the ticket for bang up situations like gigs
and some even like the amplified sound. But as an ACOUSTIC guitar
they suck so badly that they don't deserve the name guitar. How
could anypone whose played a real non-plastic well-made wooden guitar
do anything but retch when playing one of those steel-strung toilet
seat covers. Now flame me all you want on this. Go ahead and
show your lack of ability to discrimminate truly good sound from
bad. This all my totally arrogant personal opinion.

I just love reading these things, and then getting out the old Legend. Y'know, I've been playing for over 40 years, and I STILL haven't acquired the "ability to discrimminate truly good sound from bad".

To quote Bugs Bunny:

"What an ignor-AY-mus"!

"What a nin-com-POOP"!

Man, there are some people out there that REALLY have a problem with Ovation. I beleive most of them probably tried an old applause with a twisted neck at one time, and have type cast everything from Ovation in that light. One of my friends has a 5k + Taylor, and it doesn't do anything for me compared to my 1718.

I've played high-end guitars I didn't like but I didn't trash the entire brand...go figure

Everyone on this board is obviously very intelligent and reasonable, except...oh, never mind.

Is there a link to that comment?

I was in Phoenix last week and played almost all of Tup's guitars. That included 3 very very nice Martins. The guitar I preferred the most.... #47 of #47.

I've played a number of wood box guitars and have enjoyed many of them. I've played some Martins that have knocked my socks off and some that sucked. The same with almost any brand (except Taylors -- I just can't seem to bond with them, but I'm not going to rip them). But I don't denegrate the entire line because the ones I've played haven't done it for me....

Some people are just ignorant...

Very ignorant. You can't paint an entire brand with a single brush. I have played and owned many an Ovation that truely sucked. Plastic toilet seat with strings would be a kind statement. BUT... I have also played and owned many an Ovation that were wonderful sounding guitars in every way. Moody's comments about 47/47 are very true. Same goes for the woodies. Some aren't worthy of being kindling wood. Other are instruments to die for.

For heavens sake keep an open mind. The authors comments make about as much sense as eating a McDonalds hamburger and writing off the entire menu as crap. We all know that the fries are freaking wonderful!

Kinda weird... Maybe his problem is that O's sound different. All guitars sound different! I like my 4861. It sounded different to me when I got it, but it has grown on me. I hardly play my electric now. You can spend $12K for a Martin, or $48 at a flea market... It all depends on what makes you happy. Maybe he played a crappy O. Bad set-up, too much coffee, who knows. And Lynachord is belt-buckle-proof. (sorta)

With Ovations you either get it or you don't, there's rarely any half measures.

Clearly, he's never played a steel-strung toilet seat cover. Now I've played the wood, plastic AND padded ones, and Ovations do sound way better. I hate posers. :D
