Hey guys I got a 1994 Adamas 1688-8 12 string off feebay a couple days ago and it has neck issues. When it showed up thursday I opened the case and it looked aged with a pale dry fretboard and strings that looked like they could have been on it for years so I got some new strings and went to work,it cleaned up nicely and looks beautiful but the neck is overbowed it appears. It had three shims under the saddle so I pulled one thinking it would give me nice action so it has two shims under the saddle and it plays good on the first few frets but down towards the body it buzzes on the low E sting and won't fret on the high e string.I took it to my guitar tech/luthier friend and he says it it has a substantial bend and at a minimum needs a neck reset and if I wanted it to be correct it would have to have a new neck.
So my question to the forum is would you ask for a refund knowing this is a rare guitar and it might be a while before you find another or ask for a partial refund to get the neck reset and hope it doesn't throw the intonation off.
For those of you who have done neck resets what intonation issues have you ever encountered.
it is a pretty guitar but I don't want to keep a lemon.

Often Ovations have a dip at the 14th Fret.
But if you need three shims to keep it from fretting-out, that's not good.
You should at least be able to play everything up to the 12th Fret.

Was it this THIS Listing

If so... He had a false description.
Especially if the guitar was all dried-out with nasty strings.
Ask him for a Thousand Dollars for a neck reset.
Or file a claim and get ALL of your money back plus he pays the shipping.

If this is NOT the same listing... Do what I said anyway.

Man.. that's like a parking lot speed bump hump on there. If it's the same one from Arthur's link, I'm in total agreement with him... I'd file a claim and send it back at their expense. If it's not the one from the link, and you only spent a few nickles on it, then maybe you can have some fun and satisfaction in working to tweak it back to spec.

if that is all that is wrong just have a set up done. no big deal, it is a rare guitar.
of course it is only worth 12 at the most with that signature.

I'm no expert but I had a lower end Balladeer that needed a neck reset, fretwork and a new bridge pin routed to the larger pin with a new pick -up installed done at the New Hartford factory - my local luthier said it wasn't worth what it would cost.

Anyway I just love the guitar now and the repair was a bargain, I would ask the seller if he was willing to fret the bill or take it back..

Is the top diving in under the upper frets? When a guitar starts bending and needs a neck reset, you would have zero shims under the saddle and still have high action. You don't, you've got lots of shims with low action. That says the neck is either straight with the body or, perhaps, bowed backwards. The fretboard on some Ovations does take a dip from about the 14th fret to the 22nd fret and you can't get low action on those frets. But, the neck is straight and you get fine action on the 1st through 14th frets. This seems to be the way they are designed or perhaps something that happens with age.

Anyhow, if you can get the action good from 1st through 14th frets with 1 to 3 shims you don't need a reset.

If there is a hump in the fretboard at the 12th-14th frets then that is a different story. Or, if the top is caving in under the upper frets then that is a structural problem in the top, not a neck problem.

Just wondering...

When does the dreaded bowl bend come into play?

I'm no expert but if you ask me the heel needs shimming. My Holdsworth Adamas had the same issue and Km was able to fix it perfectly.

But none the less the seller really misrepresented this guitar.

I added a shim back in,3 shims now,and in plays ok from the 1st through 12 fret although a little high on the action, when you get up around the body it doesn't fret cleanly and there is hump around the 15th fret and my guitar guy said it looked like there was a little cupping where the neck meets the body.

@ flysig this is the opposite of what I'd expect on a neck with overbowing and a need for extra shims possibly caused by being left in the case tuned to E for an extended period of time so the case held the neck down to the body and the movement was in the headstock range, just a guess on my part

@adamkrz definetly something for the mothership to fix in the long run no one I would trust more with an adamas

@standingovation I discussed the idea of shimming the neck with my tech and he thought that might be a good move because if you remove wood from the neck heel you can throw off the intonation.

my next step is to contact john budny and see what he thinks, its been a holiday weekend so I'll email him about it today.

Thanks for everyone's input
