Joined: February 2015 Posts: 19 Location: Pool table flat Mansfield Tx | During late night sessions at home, my headphones are my speaker cabs. I've gone through several including a recent set of Marshall Monitors and still haven't found a pair that both has inspiring tone and accurate reproduction from my floor multi-effects (digitech rp255, 360 etc...). Has anyone hit the sweet spot for tone and accuracy? It drives me crazy to have to eq for the 'phones, then change again for recording. If it sounds like crap through the headphones but good on 'tape', the recording often sounds lifeless because I am reacting in apathy to what I am hearing while playing. Anyone else have this problem? | ||

Joined: July 2005 Posts: 1609 Location: Colorado | True story...we had spent the day in the studio cutting tracks...nice equipment - nice monitors....first thing the engineer did once we did final mixdown before sending off for mastering... was he dubbed a quick cassette - and went out to his Chevy...and listened to the tape on a 50 dollar car system....the fact is it sounds different in almost all cases...but he was happy with the clarity and transparency in the car...so that went off for mastering....amazingly space is critical to how we hear...most pro artists want live room mics in their IEMs - it is just how we like it to sound.... | ||

I understand the discipline involved going straight to the board and giving up what might sound best during self-gratuitous blasting through tunes in a non-recording session. These days, I usually play between say 10p to whenever and the other folks in the house really couldn't be described as 'fans', lol, so I have to keep it quiet, even though it sounds like Madison Square Garden between my ears. I seem to be touchy feely when it comes to tone, just wondering if anyone can recommend a set of 'phones that are fairly transparent yet not too cold, a good set of all-rounders. I don't mind paying the price, just 'haven't found what I'm looking for' after all these years. | ||

I play through a Korg Pandora PX-4 digital effects unit, and can plug in an aux send (e.g. from an MP3 player). It is quite adequate but not audiophile quality, but then my ears aren't perfect either. I mix recordings using the headphones as well as a set of monitors. It all works fine for a hobby level of production. | ||

Joined: August 2002 Posts: 8307 Location: Tennessee | AKG K240 Studio headphones is what I have used for years. I think the old ones are a lot better than what they are making now. They are really comfortable for long periods and have a open transparent sound. I'm not sure if I am as big of a Tone Nazi as you, but they work for me. I'm with enginacres though ... once I get a mix and "master" I like, I burn it to a CD and go listen to it in my cars and on some low-fi players just to make sure it still works in those environments. I find I usually need to make some tweaks before my final master. | ||

Joined: December 2006 Posts: 6994 Location: Jet City | I don't think I use mine for the exact same application as you, but for studio phones I use Audio Technica ATH-M50. I think they have a new model now (ATH-M50X). I also use a pair of Edirol MA-20D monitors when checking the mix, for the same reasons as that engineer used his Chevy. In addition, I have a half dozen or so AKG K77 phones that I route through a headphone amp into the PA sometimes for band practice. Then there's my Sennheisers... I guess there's no perfect headphone that handles everything in every situation... at least not for me | ||

I can spend up to 300.00 for a set and have spent more than that over the years looking for that go to set. The AKG 240's seem to get high marks here, I'll check them out. I like the Marshalls for direct out from my multi-effects, but have to tone down the bass and they stink at mixing. I don't totally trust the stereo in our Murano either... Maybe I'll run down to Walmart and pick up a 'downgrade' receiver for my truck... | ||

Joined: December 2001 Posts: 7222 Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | I'm sure I've answered this before... but... Sony 7506 Studio Monitors. One main feature other then rather good sound is they can handle un-freq'n-believable volume levels and not distort. They were/are VERY popular with DJ's and front of house guys because of this as well, but in the studio is where they shine. I found them roaming the floors of NAMM and noticing that anyone who was anyone that was "showing off" their Microphones or other gear were using these headphones to provide the best representation of their product. Basicially they were staking the accuracy of these phones to sell their gear. Another big reason I use them almost exclusvily is their accurate reproduction. If I'm listening to a singer, or acoustic guitar or drums and slide the phones on, the tone is essentially the same, I'm just dropping the affect of the room out of the picture and putting the instrument or voice right into my ear. Frequency response is a flat 10Hz to 20kHz !!! The ability to handle high volume, even if you don't need volume, is important to capture that booming low end, especially from our Ovations, that can wreak havoc on many headsets. I have at least 8 sets of these and a pair of 7505? (don't remember the number) which were designed for drummers and no longer made. They were basically the same as the 7506 and "technically" a "closed" set like the 7506, but the pads were/are smaller so drummers liked them because they could still hear their drums with their ears and have the volume high enough in the cans so they could hear the backing track or vocals or whatever.. clearly.
