We use D'Addario EXP16 (.012-.053) Phosphor Bronze strings on our guitars. Another string we like is the Adamas 1818 (.012-.053) Phosphor Bronze. You can use whatever string suits your playing style. Heavier or lighter strings might require a truss rod adjustment. For nylon string guitars we like the Adamas 4444 or the Savarez Alliance high tension. You can find it here: http://www.adamasguitars.com/?fa=faq.

I picked up 4 dozen a few years ago for less than $100, which works out to about $2 per set. I was a little concerned that there might be shelf-life issues, but each pack is sealed in plastic, so there shouldn't be any moisture infiltrating the packaging. This purchase has served as my base stock of strings which is supplemented from time to time with complimentary sets received from various sources. I probably don't pay as much attention to strings as I should.

Joined: March 2005 Posts: 5567 Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | My mistake: I just located the email from JB and he plainly said in response to my question "What strings does the factory use on the 1687's": D'Addario EXP16 (.012-.053) Phosphor Bronze ; and that's what I bought on my last string order: four sets of those; three sets of EJ16-3D; and two sets of EXP38-light 12 for the 12 strings...not sure what planet I was on when I answered before...it's been a long week...
