This is the first song I ever wrote or recorded. Wrote it and recorded it in the past few weeks. Let me know what you think!

You might want to turn your volume down though cause I learned after recording this a little something about the volume knobs on my audio interface... =P

Also I only really took a few takes on each part because I gotta run to work soon. The vocals and the verse guitar chord part could probably use a redo but it's just a demo. =D

Also the lyrics are really cheesy which was hard for me because it's not really my style but I wrote it for a girl. [=

Haha ok here it is:

Nice! It's got a real modern emopop sound to it. Sorta like Owl City unplugged. GREAT effort for your first time out. Stay on it.

Very nice. If that doesn't get any appreciation from the young lady, find another young lady!

Thanks, guys! The guitar work is pretty simple but I was just trying to write a simply poppy tune. Hard enough to write in a major key! Haha.

It was all on my ovation elite t, btw. Vocals with my new shure beta 58a that I love. ANd there's a guitar solo on my hamer standard. [=

Is it possible to get a miced or close to a miced sound out of the ovation preamp? I haven't messed too much with the EQ and settings, but it's always a bit tinnier or more metalic coming from the pickup than if I use the shure to mic it. But it's much louder and so much easier to just plug in.

my personal favorite way to record is with a mic AND the pickup at the same time. I mix them in my board before going to the recorder (in my case the harddrive on my computer.) But if you have any kind of multitrack recorder you can record them on seperate tracks and mix them later. But I definitely prefer a combination. Mic + Pickup

Yeah I actually did just that to see what the difference was. I plugged my guitar into a 1/4 jack on my inteface and miced it to a XLR jack. I was surprised how different it sounded. Mixing them is a good idea but I was thinking like what if I want to record vocals and guitar at the same time? I need my mic... =P I guess the pickup is always gonna sound pretty different though.

Nice. Keep it up. The tinniness you hear from the guitar is the inevitable piezo "quack." Piezo pickups always have some degree of sharpness to them. You can reduce, but never totally eliminate that characteristic sound with post-processing or judicious EQ in a live setting. But for recording the best way is to go totally with mic'ed guitar, or a mix of pickup and mic. Play around with it, that's half the fun.

Mic'd is definitely the best way to the mic'd sound. Try using several mics, one pointed at the body just behind the bridge (the widest part of the guitar, away from where a traditional center hole would be), and one at the 12th fret. I've recently been told to mic the headstock, but haven't tried that.

You can get some good mics for right around $100 new. You'll need a little mixer if you don't have one. They go for under $100 for 4 channels. Now you're starting to get in pretty deep!

Depending on what you're using to record and mix with, you could try to find a free or cheap VST plugin which emulates an acoustic guitar. Most digital emulations I've heard are pretty mediocre and not suitable for a good recording. But if you were to blend a bit of it into the mix with the raw signal you might get a decent sound.

Even just adjusting the eq on your preamp and in the mix down can help a lot. But it won't ever sound exactly like a mic'd guitar if you don't mic it.

The other possibility is the VIP preamp. You can buy a new one from Al for probably about a couple hundred (they list for $300 I believe), or find a used one. Or, buy a guitar that comes with the VIP! The VIP has digital emulations of various high end mics and you can blend that in using a slider on the preamp. However, I don't recommend this unless you can try one out on your guitar before spending $. I have two VIPs that came on two different guitars. The VIP sounds amazing on the Adamas and on my daughter's 1778T Red Flame, but sounds eh on my '07C.

Thanks people! I'm glad you guys liked it. I'm really shy about singing (AKA I've never really done it in front of anyone) and about lyric writing but I've been trying to break out of that. I wrote this song and I'm writing another one and I'm going to play at an open mic in a few nights. [=

And "camtron" is the girl that I wrote it about. I forgot the url I uploaded it at so I told her to come here and click the link.

Thanks for the advice on micing, too.
