When I first started out with my first Ovation (a solidbody), I had many many many guitar heros. There were 2 that had more influence on me and my playing style more than any other. Alex Lifeson from Rush was one and the other...
Randy Rhodes. RIP
I recently had the chance to play one of his personal guitars. It was a religious experience to play one of his solos on HIS guitar. That was until I ran out of frets. I tried to play the solo to "Revelation Mother Earth" and needed just one more fret. No wonder he switched to Gibsons and Jacksons!
All my Strat hate aside, it was pretty cool.

Location: michigan | Very cool Damon ... That was one guitar I never got to play but hope to some day .
I usually play strat electrics and am glad the photo of Randy playing a strat showed up.
I think Keven Dubrow stated that Randy did play that Strat on some of the tracks on
"QUIET RIOT, The Randy Rhoads Years".
I did get to play the polka dot flying V when Randy first got it. Shortly after I played it, the headstock got broken during a mishap w/ Quiot Riot that following week ...
It's funny we met on ovation board through a guitar transaction or two... Small World.
When I make it out ot the west coast, i'm looking you up, the guitar up and hope to have a blast.... It is on my list of things to do.
I can only imagine how cool that felt to play that guitar. I like the pictures... |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | My Hero was Dick Dale. He wasn't the greatest player that ever lived, but he was one of the leading rock instrumentalists of the day from Southern California whose music I was nuts over. Plus, he really liked loud amps.

Location: Winnipeg, Manitoba CANADA | My unlikely guitar hero... Michael Dunford from the UK progressive rock group RENAISSANCE. (Anyone here heard of him? Nowhere near enough, would be my guess...)
Michael was the reason I bought my original Adamas 1688-7 back in 1981. I even specified (to OVATION...) that I wanted the same spectral signature as MD's, which you could still do at that time.
Michael was the total 'anti-guitar hero', in that Renaissance didn't even use electric guitars on stage until a lot later on in their career. I remember seeing the band a couple of times (in Toronto...) where Michael had multiple Adamas' on stage with one mounted on a very cool looking stand so he could play 6 and 12 string guits in the same tune. This was before OVATION started making double-necks... but I'm sure Michael would have had one, if they had been around then.
Very powerful music made with acoustic guitars in a rock band setting... quite a rarity!! |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Annie Haslam was probably my first crush... didn't even notice there were other musicians on the stage... they didn't matter (to me.. at that time..) :) It wasn't until years later that I actually started listening to the music happening around her.

Location: Winnipeg, Manitoba CANADA | AMC-RADIO presenter Peter Timmerman, is friends with Stephanie Adlington (the lady that replaced Annie Haslam in a later incarnation called Michael Dunford's RENAISSANCE) as well as original drummer Terry Sullivan... According to his info (and it's usually pretty good...) a reformed version (probably not called Renaissance...) which may include several original members including Sullivan, Dunford, keyboardist John Tout and possibly my personal all-time fave bass player, Jon Camp may be touring in the not too distant future. I have heard 'rumours' that the lovely Miss Adlington may be in on vocals... Can't wait!!
Annie Haslam is said to spend most of her time painting these days and she's actually pretty good... if you like bright, erotic looking oils, lol. Check out her site http://www.anniehaslam.com/ |
