I'm about to pull the trigger on getting one of the 1581s Al has and I want a little more info on this preamp system. I see two 1/4" outputs on the bowl of the 1581s with the FET preamp. Can someone fill me in on how this preamp system really works and what benefits it possesses? Thanks.

Separation of left and right channels is achieved when used with a stereo amplifier/PA or two individual amps. Just buy one. I did.

One thing I did do, just for sng's was to route one of the outputs (strings 1, 3, 5) through a delay and then to headphone hard L and the other output (strings 2, 4, 6) clean to headphone hard R. Finger pick and play with the delay timing until it induces 100% vertigo and your brain can no longer communicate with your fingers.

A number of the early Ovation models had this feature, and it has been faithfully continued on the reissues. Personally, I think it produces a remarkable effect that I like. That's why I run two Acoustasonic Juniors in the bandroom (one channel to each), run a signal from each to the stereo PA panned wide, then boost the separation even more. All the more reason for you to pick up a second Shen Jr!

It plays beautifully, and I'm very glad I gave Al the CC#. I'll have pics this weekend. Haven't had much time.

It's probably one of those things I'll have to wait to use since I won't have any funds left for another amp if I buy the 1581. Next time I'm at your place we'll plug yours into your Fenders and check it out.

My problem with the unusual separation (135/246) has to do with single note lines. It was distracting to have the line broken up left-right-left as you moved from string to string. Not "lush" but "jagged" or "incoherent". Chords sound great. I don't use the stereo feature (in fact, I disconnected it: installed a Fishman system with 4-band ED).

Like Dobro said, they're good for rhythm/chords kind of stuff. I mic the guitar normally, and then take a stereo out hard panned left and right into two more channels. I can bring these up behind the mic'd channels to whatever level works best and get a real lush image ... it's almost like a natural chorus effect. It's a handy trick, but it's best used in moderation.
