Forget about that '85 Collectors for now! It came back from our fiend in Florida (God Bless him) completely trashed. Once I get the smoke odor out of the case and guitar, it has to go to the Mothership.
For a guitar that he told us was "the mintiest Ovation" he had "ever had" and after a tug on the rod he bragged, "now it's butter", it is obvious that something bad happened to it in Florida. Instead of receiving payment for it as promissed, it showed up on my doorstep 10 months later reeking from smoke, with craters in the rosewood fretboard, and at least in need of a reset. |

Location: Chehalis, Washington | OUCH! That's a shame. Try using Ozium on the smoke smell - I've used it to fumigate both a guitar and a couple cases, and it works really well. |

I've given the case and guitar a few good cleanings and good old sunshine. I'll get some Ozium. When I send it in to the Mothership, I'll ask them to pack it with, and in, wood shavings. |

Location: ranson,wva | noah,ive had the same problme with alot of the cases that ive bought,the one that was realy bad was the one my balladeer came in,it stank of cheap cigars and beer,i packed the case with ceader shavings then packed it in a box of shavings. after about 4-6wks most of the stench was gone...my cases and guitars are in the spare room with a air purifier and what not...jason |

Location: Tuulos, Finland | Just occured to me, as Winter has started here (over 12 inches snow has came down in last two days), that some of you might want to share with me experiences between wooden and 'synthetic' tops in varying (cold) conditions? I am considering an Adamas Q598 ..
I remember reading from somewhere that Ovation tops are prone to crack (as they are made quite thin opposite to the hard bowl) under increased string tension ... and that happens when metal strings are getting cold?! However, I know one musician who has played Ovation now for over twenty years here in Finland, with no problems .. so are the wooden tops (or bracing?) thicker in older models?
One more, have you used Elixir strings with Ovations .. and referring to the previous question, what gauges are 'allowed'? I use .010 - .046 with my electric quitars. |

Location: Chehalis, Washington | Tried Elixers on my 1869, didn't like them as well. I stick with D'Addario EXP's on mine. Typically, I use the lights (.12 to .56) and that works beautiful on all my O's.
Petri, the longest I've had an Ovation was for 12 years, and I never had a single problem with cracks or weather-related issues. Granted, our weather out here is not very severe, and it was never really gigged hard on a regular basis, just weekly church stuff and the occasional concert.
That being said, if you can get an Adamas, go for it. The Q's are supposed to be really nice, and the carbon tops eliminate pretty much any concern you have on the weather issue. |
