Will phantom power harm a mic that doesn't require it? I've got a Sennheiser clone of the Shure 58.

Nope....I run several types of mics including two AT2020 condensers and a couple of SM58's all of which I leave plugged in all the time (not to mention an XLR for my O/A's).

Did extensive research on the topic including chatting with the fine folks at Mackie and standard "dynamic" mics ignore the phantom power. I have all the wiring diagrams somewhere to prove it, but probably am too lazy to look for them.

Plug in an go for it.

Apparently, Jeffrey has put a lot more thought into this than I have. :p

The only possible exception would be ribbon mic's, which can be damaged by phantom power.

But your answer was more technically correct and concise. Probably should have left it with NO!

No (except ribbons as previously pointed out).

Although some ribbons (Blue Woodpecker) do require 48V power. So bottom line....always best to check.

The SM58 is the cockroach of microphones. It can take a direct hit from a thermonuclear device and be just fine.
