Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR		Okay... This guitar has some problems, and I probably paid to much. But I got Sucker'd!
[Or fell in Love... whichever]
This is a 30 year-old guitar with a repaired crack, finish cracks, and 'bellying'...
But the dude let me Play it... And that was IT!



This is supposed to be a Deep Bowl, but it doesn't feel that deep to me...
Maybe I have just gotten used to Bowls after all these years....


BTW- Contrary to what these photos look like, the bowl is brown.

Also, it has some Bellying... Is this the worst y'all have seen? Or is this acceptable for it's age?



He said that all the bracing is intact on the inside, and it sounded great when I played it.

Any comments or input is welcome...
But mostly I am just bragging, again! :cool:

Ain't it great when you find one that just speaks to you? Those old Legends, especially that vintage, are hard to beat. And that one looks like a beauty, not a beater! Congratulations.

Location: SoCal		Great get OMA. Are you sure it's a 78? The stacked knob came in after that. Bet it's a 79-80. What kind of bracing does it have?

Location: Jet City		We have 2 1617s in the house, an older (like yours) -1 that is my son's, and a -4 from the early 80s with a kbar and A bracing (mine).

They're both great sounding, though very different to my ears. Congrats Arthur!

Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR		As far as it's year, serial number is 156848... The reference page guesses '78. But who knows?
The guy I bought it from sez that is has Fan Bracing.(?)
But I haven't looked inside yet.
He said that the strings are relatively new, and the battery works so I won't be going inside the bowl for awhile.

OH! While I am here... The bowl has two little chips in the back, and you can see the white weave underneath. What is a good fix for this? Someone recommended brown nail polish.... I don't think so. :p Here is a crappy pic...


You cannot see the weave in this photo, but you get the eye-dear. :eek:

I think it would also be a later model than you're saying it is.

I do know that it has a five-piece neck and TRC and it sounds similar to my 1121 (with more bass) and has real cords under the brown stuff...

I'll find-out more once I take this strings off, but that ain't happenin' for a few weeks.

Later, when I get ambitious, I will do a side-by-side with my 1621.

Agreed on the reason for the sound. It could be a 78. It was around this time that A bracing was being phased in, even w/o some guitars having a K-bar. The stacked tone/volume control also came in around this time....

(Had 'em all out for side-by-side-by-side sound comparisons)



No one has volunteered a solution to covering that chip in the bowl that I mentioned earlier....
Any suggestions?

Great answer!

Find a brown felt tip marker. Ya may have to buy a set to get a brown. Then apply and let dry. Repeat until the color is a match. If ya get ink on the brown finish, it will rub off. But the exposed white will 'take' the ink.
