I believe they're typically made of plastic or wood and, from the linked ad here "...Protects finish from perspiration and allows top to vibrate more freely since arm is elevated slightly off the top." I've never actually used one so really don't know much more about them than that...

Location: Frozen Tundra of Minnesota | He does such a BEAUTIFUL job on his guitars! He has fixed up several and restored them to their Glory Days again, and he hand carved the bridge on this one! Very detail oriented, and has a fine hand!!
He also did the bridge on his '82 Collector!
Check out the Custom Light Blue Tuning Pegs he made to match!!!
DW needs to get him in their Custom Shop!!

Location: Muenster/Germany | It´s really not a big thing, all you need is a precision hand drilling/polishing machine and several molding cutters and polishing tools. First you draw what you want to make later on the wood and then remove any material that does not look like the flowers etc. you want to have on the end.It´s simply sculpting. I decided to do this relatively free so that the flowers really look hand-made and not like carved from (chinese) cnc machines.
The only really important thing is the courage, because you have only one attempt...

Location: Muenster/Germany | The armrest are ugly. I know. Ernie Rissman makes them from wood and uses a coating that makes them look as if they were made from the body material, that´s the best he could do.
Regarding the SOUND IMPROVEMENT of my guitars I must say that I use armrests on ALL guitars, even on a Martin D 45. On high-end handmade guitars they are quite normal today. |

Location: Flahdaw | My technique isn't terrible, but I still get icky smudges on my guitars. I wouldn't mind an armrest, even tho they are kinda goofy looking. |

Location: Cicero, NY | I don't use them at all and never thought they were all that attractive either but I must admit, while you'd think just the opposite, that 1537 is so sharp the armrest doesn't bother me at all. That's just a really great looking guitar. |

Location: 6 String Ranch | The Collings mando I have came with an arm rest. Works pretty well on that, I wouldn't use one on a guitar. I'm not a fan of carved bridges, I don't like the uneven surface as I rest my hand on the bridge when playing which I know you're not spozed to do. But this guy does nice work, no denying that. |
