Hello all. Just got one today from the 'Bay and love it. What I need to know is, what can I do to determine why the amped output is great on the G and D, but about half the volume on the A and maybe a little more on the E. Everything looks good under the saddle. I removed the shims to lower the action and that made it worse of course. I put one back in and it's better but the A and E still sound anemic. Ideas?

It might be bad piezo crystals under those strings. If it is Ovation can sell you a replacement pickup. If it is a thinline another member had one for sale.

Here's a link to that thread.

Bad peizos, or the glop that glues the saddle to the pickup has deteriorated and you're getting uneven contact of the saddle to the pickup. Either way, you're better off with a new PUassy. They're easy to replace.

I'm the guy with the pickup Mike mentioned. It's new and never been used. I don't even know what it's worth, but make an offer. I'd much rather have it being used than sitting in my man cave closet.

Anyone know what the MS would get to ship one of these?

Thanks so far guys! I'll take it apart again today to see what type it is. It didn't LOOK like a Thinline but I may be wrong. I shoot a pic later. Cool bass though!

That's the thinline. Is there anything still inside the bridge slot? You might not have all the pieces in the right places. I took a thinline apart once and put the white plastic piece under the metal cradle where the shims go and it didn't work right.
Try to find a manual on the Ovation site and they might show you all the pieces and how they are supposed to fit together.

I'll take it apart again tonorrow, but here's what came out top to bottom (I think!), the saddle, then the metal rail-type thingy. Inside of that, under the saddle was a thin layer of clear mylar, then the strip with I assume, the piezo crystals. Under the rail, another thin clear mylar strip, then an angled white plastic strip. All this sitting on the bottom of the bridge route. No doubt someone's been in here before since the white plastic strip looks kinda lumpy and roughly trimmed. Also, the braided shield right at the solder connection on the pickup underside looks a bit frayed from going in and out several times. I actually changed the strings to Thomastik Jazz flats today and it's alot better, but still uneven. Highly recommended upgrade! I still wonder if I should just get the Thinline being offered here. Are the bass and guitar ones all the same? Obviously I need a bass one!

The thinline I have (and want to eventually not have) was meant for a 6 string.

May I suggest you get in touch with John B. I got a steal on my MOB47 due to someone not knowing what they were doing in lowering the action. The piezo layer was under the 'u' shaped brass holder. Even after reassembling the pup properly, no luck. JB took care of me!

Instead of guessing, contact John and all will be well! :D

Thanks! Which John B though? I checked in the Directory here and there are two, both junior members with no posts. (?) Sounds like just the guru I need though!
