You can see my fleet down in my signature, but I can say that the 2009 C is one of the best sounding, with best playability (1 3/4") neck and the best appearance of all guitars of mine is. It has a nice deep voice with full midth and although crisp highs. I love it very much and never want to miss it. Bernie

Personally I have not found them to have any more "highs" than a good Martin. I think this model comes closest to a wood box sound. But who knows... you might end up with an anomaly. Your millage may vary.

If you really want to compare it to the "best" you would have to ask MusicMike cause that's were all the "best" go to hang out! Right Mike ;) :D

I'm always behind the guitar, and what I primarily hear is what comes out of the amp. All Ovations sound good through an amp, most are great with some FX mixed in, and some are truly exceptional. I think the acoustic variation between different models may be greater than their electric variation, but this would be an interesting A/B test if it could be done empirically.

I've got several very nice sounding wood guitars for unamplified playing, but I want a wide neck, cutaway, contour backed for a/e use. But I also know that it will be played 90% of the time unplugged because that is life. I guess my question was kinda stupid, but those that own the Koa probably have an opinion on how THEY like it versus the other models they own. Is it the first they pick up when they return home from a long trip away, or is it the 3rd in line. Anyone own BOTH the Koa and the newer Folklore with the contour back? How would you compare those 2 models (warmth, acoustic tone)?

I think the playability of both is the same, the voice of the 2774 has more sparkle, the 2009C is more bassy and more mid range. Bernie

I doubt I would ever get the chance to play both at the same time (may not even get the chance to play ONE of them.) Bernie I've got Englemann, Sitka, and Adirondack topped gits....don't have a Koa or a cedar. May have to go in that direction just for variety. Assuming the necks are similar, the plugged in sound has got to be pretty close.

Not only are they fabulous lookers with their highly figured Koa tops and tortoise binding, but they have a cutaway, wideneck, contour back, ebony F-board, rare oval sound hole on the base epaulet, and the topshelf VIP electronics with XLR output jack. They're also slotheads. It isn't the first one I reach for, but it is most likely the prettiest guitar I own. The only problem is there aren't many of them and they rarely change hands. I think all but one of the original owners still cling to them.

I have been fortunate to acquire some very fine instruments...and to my ear, several are extraordinary... Right Mike [Wink] [Big Grin] ...but seriously "Best" is a variable left to the ear of the beholder...

That is as good as any description. I can hear the difference in the hardness of the koa wood as opposed to a spruce or especially a cedar. I really like the looks of the 09 Collector, but the LAV Koas are much more rare and unusual. It would be worth it to have one koa guitar in the stable and you may as well go for a rare one.
