Amazing what changing the strings can do. Take your average nylon string Viper. Sounds OK but you gotta be playing that kind of music. I put a gypsy 11-46 set of steels on it and it sounds sweet, love the wide neck, (I like those, have I ever mentioned that?) and the flat fingerboard radius is great for slide when you drop it down to open D.
This way, steel on a nylon work much better than nylons on a steel.

Did it on my Country Artist with gypsy 10-46 and hated it. They sounded better on the ute. But if you send the viper I'll report back by Christmas.

Interesting. I've used a nylon Viper as my main stage guitar for well over a year and just picked up a steel string version while I was over for the tour. I slipped an extra shim in and used it for slide at the jam, but struggled a little with the neck width and string spacing. Since then I've thought about looking for another nylon Viper to set up as a steel string for slide, but I like to use pretty hefty strings, a couple of 17's for the first and second up to a 60. I figured those gauges on the Viper's classical bridge may not be a good idea. What do you think?

I think you might have problems.

After I posted my reply I remembered it was silk'n'steels I put on the Country Artist - with pathetic results. So today I put a set of Thomastik Rope Cores - 10-38 - on and it sounds fabulous. :D :D

I'm not concerned about what it will sound like. The construction of the steel and nylon Vipers is almost identical and the steel string version sounds great. My only concern is the tension on a set of 17-60 phosphor bronze ripping the bridge off the Nylon Viper

I put a set of martin silk and steels on my 1116 recently after finding an old post from Paul T.(thanks). I just didn't care for the dull nylon sound on this particular guitar. I like it much better but still want to try the Thomastik strings too.

Paul, go for it. If it comes off it's from a glue failure. The weepers have a solid piece of wood under the bridge, it's all solid there so it can take the tension. Hay, it it fooks oop, I'll getcha anoother oone.

Doesn't the Viper steel string come with 13-56's? would think the nylon could be able to handle that.

I have 17-60 on my old Legend (no bridge bolts) and also on a MOB (bolted bridge) Both are showing absolutely no sign of stress. I guess I need to start looking for another Nylon Viper.

For those of you who are using silk and steel, you might like to check out the new John Pearse phosphor bronze and silk sets. I've been selling them for a while and have had very positive comments from customers.
