I have read through the posts and have seen evidence that many of you are 40 to 50 year old males with a backround of Rock and Roll. I'd like to see what some of the less verbal (typal?) Members have been playing through their life.

It works like this - type a string of Artists/Songs you have started playing and bring yourself up to date. Besides sharing your history you'll probably get a kick out of remembering yourselves. Me first...

Cat Stevens,PP&M,Wedding Song,Randy Stonehill,CSN&Y,Karla Bonhoff,Foggy Mtn Breakdown,Stairway(duh),Sweet Madam Blue,Roundabout,Steve Miller,Heart,Pink Floyd wish you were here,Sweet Home Alabama, Willie Nelson,(long pause for apprenticeship/first marriage/two daughters/divorce),Garth Brooks,(pause for New Wife/add a daughter),Vince Gill,Glen Campbell,Randy Stonehill,Rich Mullins,City on a Hill songs and Songs with CCLI#s at the bottom of the page.

That was good for me, how about you? :D

M, I'm probably not one of the less verbal members, but I'll have my say and get out of the way....

Started out in 1970 playing BEATLES on my first (electric) guitar. Let It Be, Run For Your Life, Don't Let Me Down, lotta early stuff. Also Fire and Rain, CCR and CSNY. Pause for college.

Then, after the Applause arrived (when it and I were not old), Dan Fogelberg, America, Eagles and more CSNY. Pause again for marriage. Then, took a guitar class 13 years ago...Beatles, CSNY....pause again....

Then last summer....got another electric(Epi Casino) and tried blues, CCR and Doobie Bros. Found that I needed a band to do that stuff properly, so went back solo acoustic....to CSNY, Eagles, America, Beatles, Gordon Lightfoot, and writing my own stuff. Been playing Eagles' "Take It Easy" , "My Man", the Byrds' "Jesus Is Just Alright", and working on a couple of my own songs lately.....

My 12-strings pretty much rule the roost around here, so songs that sound good on 12-strings tend to get played more. :)

Started back in 1975 with a 2nd-hand Balladeer,
played easier acoustic stuff; Eagles, America, John Denver,

Bought a Les Paul, Joined a garage band and got more sophisticated; Cream and other Clapton stuff, Santana, Beatles, Allman Brothers, Doobies, The Who, Rolling Stones, etc.

Got married, got poor, joined the Air Force, sold my Les Paul and my amp, grew introspective and focused on acoustic stuff; Neil Young, Crosby Stills and Nash, Cat Stevens,
deeper Beatles stuff, Harry Chapin, James Taylor, etc. Bought a Legend 1717

Got a good job, too busy to play much for a few years.

Bought a Telecastor and a Champ Amp and joined a older guys garage band; Steely Dan, U2, Elvis Costello, more Clapton, etc.

Got tired or dragging equipment around and trying to get a band together at the same place and the same time, tired of noisy drummers and people who only want to play hard rock. sold the Tele.

Back to acoustic, mostly solo but I do enjoy an occasional jam with my friends. Bought a Martin. Now I am trying to hone my acoustic skills, learn true fingerpicking, learn to be a better singer. I try songs that I enjoy and I have a fighting chance of performing half way decent, I also find myself going back to my roots;

Beatles, Allman Bros, Neil Young, Eagles, Bare Naked Ladies, Matchbox 20, Harry Chapin, James Taylor.

Thanks for the interesting post

That is a good summary of many of any type picker's experiences. I went through some of the same things as a bluegrass mandolin player thrust into California country folk rock in the 70's. My biggest complaint was having blues harp players taking over the bluegrass sessions, I even played on a TV program background music session set up by a blues harp player with connections in the TV industry, talk about compromising your bluegrass soul, we alternated banjo breaks with harp solos.

Generally I like country to set around and play with my guitar, Mickey Newberry, Chris Christofferson, Townes Van Zandt, Louvin Brothers, any Hank (Snow, Williams), Jerry Lee, Johnny Cash, Caddillacs, etc.

I'm a new member here, and am enjoying the posts. Started playing rock & roll in high school. Was playing stuff like Ventures, and then the Beatles blew me away. Graduated to Hendrix, Cream, Doors, etc. Went in the service for 4 years, and came back home to Ct., and was introduced to "in your face blues" at the legendary Shaboo Inn. Started playing rock again, mostly top 40, but was bitten by the blues, and still am. Am proud to say, that the Adamas and Applause were built in my hometown for quite a few years. I write and record here in Tampa, Fl and am a huge Ovation fan. Best to all of you.

Top 40 stuff:Cat Stevens, Loggins and Messina, Bob Dylan, Kris Kristoferson, Neil Young, CS&N, CSN&Y. Then grew up some, more Bob Dylan, The Band, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Neil Young. Then the reggae phase, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh. Then the didn't play for a long time phase. Nowadays stuff I've downloaded tabs for:Bob Dylan (is there a there a theme here?), Jorma Kaoukonen, some reggae tunes, Wilco, SunVolt, Grateful Dead.
And with the band:Bob Dylan, Mickey Newberry, Roger Waters, Bob Marley, The Band, Beatles, some random oldies but goodies(5 O'Clock World, Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying), Tom Petty, Neil Young and original songs by our band, we call it folk rock for the lack of anything better....

First song I ever learned was King of The Road by Roger Miller. From there I got into Glen Campbell, Jim Croce, Neil Diamond and the Eagles. I was always the outcast in high school. It was the age of Iron Butterfly (In A Gadda Davida)etc. at my school. I have always been in the gray area in my style. Folk people say I'm too country and country people say I'm too folk so I ask everyone how they like my "folkin' country music! Actually I am a ballad type of guy and write alot of Croce style music. I sing with a country band once a week where we play old hard core country and quite a bit of the new stuff which traditionalist country fans turn their noses up at but generally, I still work a single act. Hey I'm an old lounge act type fella who loves to finger pick rather than strum! That's where I just bounce all over the place with Kenny Loggins, Garth Brooks, James Taylor, Neil Diamond, and yes Kenny Rogers. But Jim Croce was my kinda guy. Too bad he died so young. He had tons more of great music inside him.

I'm lovin it! Common streams? You bet.

I especially like to hear about the Bluegrass players. Where do your Ovations fit in with the other players? When I had my 70'ish Balladeer it rang through with it's own voice. Compared directly with the Guild D50 it had a little less low end but just as much push.

Started playing bars as part of a duo and sometimes band, back in 76 when I was 16 (looked a lot older than my age, and nobody really cared to check back then). Played a lot of Croce, Chapin, Stevens, Taylor, Simon/Garfunkel. Depending on the audience, we would do sets of 50's 60's country, blue grass, whatever. My partner in crime was the real talent (guitar lead/rythmn, 6/12, banjo, harmonica, keyboard, mandolin, a regular Roy Clark without the sideburns or money), I just went along for the ride playing mainly 12 string rythmn and vocals.

Quit "performing" around 79, other than weddings and get togethers. Hadn't seriously picked a guitar until a little over a year ago (it's all my pawnshop Legend's fault). Play mainly solo originals, or contemporary Christian/Worship nowdays, and strictly as a ministry at church, home, or at school(I teach "troubled" youth). I believe in using the "talent" or gift (as quaint as it may be)God has given me in his service, to reach out with a message of hope to those who are hurting.

Not what most like to hear...but there it is.

Amen!

Any board that says they are open to opinions...
should be open to opinions. From what I've seen that is not a problem here.

I like that term "troubled youth" - It accounts for everybody I know at some time.

BTW - We are doing the Purpose Driven Life as a church body where I attend. I strongly suggest it to all.

Let everything that has breath (and strings) praise the Lord!
