Hello Adamas experts.

A few minutes ago I bought the 1981 vintage 1681 from Guitar Center Roseville. Did anybody on this list own that guitar?

I bought it over the telephone so I will not see it until perhaps Friday.

The salesman said the top is lifting a bit at the bottom near the strap pin. He said it should easily repairable by regluing.

Anybody been through an Adamas top reglue?

Did I just buy myself a visit to the mothership?

Carl

...and you can always return it to any Guitar Center if it's a disaster.

I had a similar problem with an 1881. The top broke loose from shipping. I masked the surrounding areas and carefully injected CA (thin) with a needle applicator between the top and banding. That was several years ago and it is still good as new.

CA locks immediately too.. so I guess you could string it up right away and play. I'm beginning to think this is a 10-minute problem.

Appreciate the replies.

That... and I can hardly wait to play a deep bowl texture top Adamas.

Is it the top lifting from the mounting ring lip or the mounting ring separating from the body? My 1681 had a small area with the ring separating from the body. My guitar tech at the time, an authorized Kaman repair guy, consulted with the factory, and applied epoxy to that area from the inside. That was 30 years ago and the repair has held... though there is still a visible crack between the body and the ring.

I should also mention how it compares to the Q597.

Very similar sound....

I have Martin FX .011 strings on the Q and D'Addario plain .011;s on the 1681.

The Q makes a slightly deeper base E.

The Q is slightly "brighter" than the 1681... perhaps due to the difference between deep and mid depth bowl (?).

The neck is thinner on the Q.

The 1681 is heavier than the Q.

Well... it's here...

Here is the link to the pictures...

Turns out the "lifting top" is actually a foot long crack probably from a significant drop.

It was the ring separated from the bowl. Not the top from the ring.

I glued both the outside with brown wood glue and the inside with CA. It is holding with size 11 strings. There is also an ugly ding on the top of the headstock.

The top looks great with no pick marks at all.

So - do I keep it or not?

I would want to sell it for what I have in it... so what would be a price people would pay for a crack-repaired, dinged headstock 1681 that plays like a dream?

Never mind the price question... after sleeping on the matter it became clear...

The reassuring thoughts about the repair eased my concerns.

it's a keeper.

Good job. If I got something like that, I'd start playing it and add it to my mental "project list" and never get it fixed. You got right after it.

Congrats Carl! A shame it's been knocked around a bit. I'd check with MS, at least to get an estimate. Might not cost that much to have 'em set it right again.

you can also stick your finger into the wave and feel how thin the top really is - the raw edges are exposed on the inside.

The CVT is super thin and the carbon fibre is super "hard"...

Love these Adamas tops.
