All stringsets highlight a big difference in sound brilliance between 3rd and 4th string (G and D): when you play going from metal covered to naked nylon (from D to G) there is a deep gap in terms of clearness. It happens playing acoustic: of course when you amplify, you can equalize - but come on... I could only find a compromize, using Normal Tension for Metal covered Strings and Hard Tension(or very hard, depending on the brand) on nylon ones: in such case, the difference is not that big anymore. Any owner of Classical testifying his experience? Any solutions from anybody else?

You are going to need to experiment with string brands and gauges until you hear something you like. Maybe try the Savarez wound trebles. Aquila strings are excellent and should be easy to get hold of, as they are manufactured in Italy.

But why that difference between the 4th and the other two nylon ones? the gap between these two and the metal coated ones is acceptable, after all... In any case I do realize it's a matter of trying the right set for the guitar! Thank you for your replies.

The composite G string has a different tone and is supposed to ease the transition between the wound basses and the nylon trebles.

The 4rd string is actually thicker than the 5th string. Moody loved the sound but hated the way they felt. :p Great tone though! :D You can also safely use John Pearse Thomastics on it. They have very "steel-like" trebles which are polisished flat wound nylon ovaer a steel rope core. Very thin in guage, very bright in tone, but they have enough mass to get the top moving nicely. They turn a classical guitar into a nice jazz guitar. Nothing is a bright as bronze over steel, but I like silver wrapped basses.
