Location: australia | Hello, I am a new member from Brisbane Australia, also new to ovation, I am considering buying a ultra delux 1312d, it is @550 australian dollars, does this sound right? also does this model have the same credibility as others?..many thanks |

So...what condition is it in?
Does it come with a case?
I'm making an assumption that the 'd' stands for 'deep'. (Ovations come with either Shallow, Mid Depth or Deep bowls)
Make sure you're comfortable with the 'feel' of the guitar before you commit. Many people can't cope with the round back - especially the deep ones. I've never had an issue with the deep bowls, which I prefer, and the Ovation necks are the best there is.
Are you buying it privately or through a dealer?
And credibility...?
If 'credibility' is important to you, don't buy an Ovation. There aren't too many Ovation admirers down here. But if you know what you like and you like Ovations, buy it and you'll love it.
Is it Korean or Japanese? If it's Japanese, I've heard that some are as good as the US models, but the US models have the most kudos and are generally better.
Bottom line? For AUD$550, you won't get a better guitar in that price range. Try to talk them down a touch.
Bottom bottom line? Go for it. Especially if it has an Ovation case.
And welcome to the best forum on the internet. These nutters will keep you amused even if they don't always talk Ovations. And don't be surprised if you start a thread and it goes WAAAAYYY off topic.
Hang around. There are a handful of Aussies here that are somewhat active. Don't expect an immediate answer as the AUS/US time difference screws us for that. Some members access the forum at work and others wait until they get home.
It is VERY unusual for a whole raft of members to jump on the welcome bandwagon within a short time. (Where are you Lanaki?)

There are a few who have Ultras round here and most seem to really like them...
With the Ultra's, in particular, the thing you need to watch for, being down under- in the lower hemisphere, as you are, is, which direction the sound swirls out of the sound-hole. If it swirls out in a counter-clockwise direction, it's set-up for the southern hemisphere, if it swirls out clockwise you'd need to get it to a luthier to have its Coriolis Effect tuned for the southern hemisphere. There are a couple of ways to tell which hemisphere it's tuned to. You can put a small bit of dry ice in the bowl and watch which way the "smoke" swirls out as you play
- or -
if you have a good ear you can just listen... if you strum, from bass strings to treble strings and you hear it come out as if you strummed from treble to bass, you'll know it needs a Coriolis Effect set-up.

Kougra, it's really for any centre hole Ovation - but in the USA Ovations, the effect is not so obvious.
Unfortunately, if you've got a multi hole Ovation, like an Elite, the only cost effective way to get it to sound right is to play it while hanging upside down. :D |
