I have all three (non O, excuse me)...
Yes they are all different, but the one with two Humbuckers (Oscar Schmidt Delta King) seems to be the one that I have the most trouble getting the sound I want out of...
I figured that if I initiated this discussion, I might get me some education and insight... :cool: |

Location: Marlton, NJ | In my very limited experience - I've tried s/s/s (my strat) in two different configurations, a s/s (Viper) and an H/H (Preacher).
The Viper has the Woody mod - a blender for the two pups instead of a selector switch. This gives it a much wider range of sounds IMHO.
For the strat, I used to have the push button that gave me every possible combination of the three pups - way too many choices - so when I replaced the pups I rewired it to a standard strat config. This also gives alot of different sounds.
I never really liked the sound of the Preacher, which is why I replaced the pups about 30 years ago.
I would have to say just based upon my limited experience, that I prefer the strat s/s/s. I will say though that before I added the Texas Specials, I liked the Viper better. It was a "raunchier" sound. |

Location: Capital District, NY, USA Minor Outlying Islands | My go to electric is a tele loaded with classic bridge and neck single coils. My alternate is my papoose loaded with a humbucker. Love 'em both. I guess I don't need that middle strat pup. Simplier the better at least for me. |

Location: Copenhagen Denmark | Okayyy....basically , it`s about a coil wound around a magnet ( causing an Electro -Magnetic field ) , a wire moving in such a field , will conduct a current through that , a Single -coil guitar -PU will generate about 5000 Ohm output , But when the coil is tapped in the middle ( called a Humbucker = parallel double Single coil with plus coupled to plus / min coupled to min ), it will have a difference of , - 2500 Ohm , this will cause a " balanced -configuration " , meaning , that the "bad -sounds " are cancelled , so that only the " good -sound " will remain , however , that generates an Impedance -drop ( 2500 Ohm ) , in order to understand why the sound of a Humbucker can be perceived as "warm".. or.."lifeless " , Do realise , that an Amplifier works with a ratio in the order of ( to work properly ) , 1 : 4 , ..for ex., 5000 Ohm Output (Coil) into 20.000 ohm input ( Amp. ) , now , a single coil has ( usually ) a 5000 Ohm output , whereas , a Humbucker ( usually ) has 2.500 Ohm output , a ratio of 1:8 !! , causing a " warmer sound " , without "hum , nor hiss " , , However , when a " hum-bucker " has a resistance ( say 5000 Ohm ) , the same as a single -coil , than it would have the same sound as a Single -coil ( theoretically !! ) , Without it`s drawbacks , No -Hum , No -Hiss , and Neglible -Noise , but with the " Zest -Fire " of a Single -coil..... :)

I sure do think the best sounding humbuckers are in the UKII, but I'm biased. I have a Flying V with 2 hummers, a T-60 with 2 hummers, a UK II with 2 hummers... and so on. They all have their own unique sound.
THose OS guitars just may be duds. Maybe try a different guitar, or even try new pickups in that same guitar? |

I actually Like the guitar, but somehow I don't find the H/H as versatile as my Psuedo-Strats...[S/S/S & S/S/H]

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | It's no secret, I think the Viper with it's two hot single coils is the most flexible guitar around, hands down.
For any non-Ovation, each guitar has it's "sound" and I go from just a 1 pickup UltraGS to my MCS Bich 10 with it's full electronics package which includes two boosters and a varitone, both humbuckers coil tapped and a phase switch.
But the "go to" guitar for me has been a Viper since 1978. |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | I've always preferred single coils, and the Texas Specials that come stock on an SRV Strat, and can be installed on any other strat, are my favorites. I have some P-90s on a Gibson archtop that also sound great, and have a Hamer archtop on order with 3 custom P-90s. For humbuckers, the Burstbucker Pros that come standard on the LP Standards are extremely hot. I am also getting familiar with the range of tones available from the VXT. For the most part, I prefer an emphasis on the neck pickup regardless of the configuration of the guitar. |

Location: Utah | My current favorite is HSH. It was a HSS but all the pickups were replaced.
So now it has a crunchy humbucker in the neck position for driving rhythm. It has a balanced and moderate output humbucker in the bridge for leads or a brighter harsher 60's sound to rhythm. It has coil tap, too. The middle position is a classic Strat sounding single coil sized humbucker.
So with one guitar I can get a lot of variety. Everything from searing lead to chunky rhythm to sweet Strat. |

Location: Carle Place, NY | I really like coil tap on humbuckers. It switches out one of the coils thereby changing the sound to single coil (not perfectly, but good enough). The two electrics that I have, a Schecter and a Peavey T-60, both have coil taps and separate volume and tones for each pup. The combination gives me as much tonal variety I can use. |
