I agree. But I might add that sometimes it is also tough to put our egos aside and realize that not everyone has as much experience as we might (or not).
From the Slipkid Manifesto:- Some members have been here a long, long time. To them even I am a “newbie”. The possible pitfall to that length of time at the wheel is that the Old Guard can fall into the “Heard it all before, Said it all before” mind set. Perhaps newbies would better grow into the club if one of us bit the bullet and answered the same question we have heard 2,398 times before about the tendency of the Ovation bowl to slip off the lap. I know it’s much easier to just say, “Do a search” but we have all had those type of questions ourselves at some time.
And because both sides should be represented:
- Newbies:
- Hopefully you were given a warm welcome soon after you first post. But be warned. You are coming fresh into a group with A LOT of history behind them. Be patient. It will take some time to get the feel of the place.
- You may get the impression that the OFC is “clicky” and that there is an “in” crowd. Well… in a way you are right. But not “clicky” in the exclusion type of way and not “in” in a superior type of way. This is a group where members have traveled thousands of miles and have spent some big, big bucks to be with each other at many different types of occasions. This type of face to face gatherings breeds a higher level of friendship than can be had just out of a computer screen alone. So until you have made trips like that, or encouraged an OFC member through a serious illness, or anonymously and behind the scenes kicked in $20, $50, or $100 to help a family in need, don’t judge to harshly.

Location: Vancouver, WA | I see your point as well Patch..I guess we need to know what we do know, and have the humility to ask for help with what we do not. And I have felt greatly welcome by everyone, even when being given advice that differs from my own opinions.

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | While the intent is perfect, and probably all that counts, I'm not sure the top diagram is really accurate. I think I can speak for Al in saying that for the most part we are just each our own little one of those circles. We are fans of Ovation guitars, it's why we're here. We're also the caretakers of the club from a technical sense. A good analogy I think is to think of any club that uses a clubhouse. In this case, the clubhouse (forum) was donated by a couple of guys (Al and I) and we have some very basic house rules required for use. But 99% of the time, we're just members here like everyone else.

and then
you have miles with no direct connection to you ( me ) who you make out to be much wider in the waist than alpep and he is much lower on the diagram ,
what are you insinuating here ?

Location: NJ | at the risk of sounding arrogant (many of you already think I am) I have probably forgot more about Ovation/Adamas guitars than the average person. I have been to the factory countless times, had many meeting formal and informal with the folks that work there and when I am challenged on rudimentary issues I just don't have time for it anymore.
If I tell you something it is my job her to be 100% accurate. I try to keep the integrity of this board by not having rumor and misinformation posted. If I am wrong and there has been at least one documented case. I will correct myself and apologize. but to beat a dead horse is of no interest to me. |

Yup... If there was one feature I could figure out how to ad, it would be the "this is the answer" icon, "further discussion is not needed."
My favorite is the "how would you ship this guitar" question. Both Alpep and I have received and shipped more guitars successfully worldwide than most anyone including most music chains excluding the GC, MF, Carvin type places who ship all the time. Yet there always seems to be the "my way is the way to it" and inevitably and unfortunately there is the dreaded outcome. I think I've had to file two or three claims in over 10 years and nearly... well... if you count all shipments, not just guitars.... it's in the 1000's. FWIW, I learned how to ship stuff from Alpep. Your way MAY be successful, Al's way WILL be successful.
The only thing I might add to the circles above is that everyone has direct access to Al and I. Not sure how you would show that, but thought I would mention it.

I think this is the most engaging forum I've ever been part of, and I think a lot of the reasons for that are made evident in this thread. (walks away, wiping brown streaks off nose) |
