Did they start out with brown then go to black, if so what year did they change? Now it appears to be black with the logo inside the case. When did that start?

Location: Phoenix AZ | The real expert on cases on Bob Frith, but here's my take on it. Limited to acoustic hardshell cases. First came the black opr grey "tolex" typr cases. Inside was blue (rare) or orange (common). Manufacturers were Lifton and Gieb. Then around '70-'71 came the first brown molded case with plain black edge. Around '74 changed to a larger aluminum edge with black tape trim. Insides were brown. There are a few variations of these having to do with the size of the neck compartment, width of the neck channel and various cutouts for electronics. I think there were multiple suppliers of these. Then came the black version which was basically the same case. next was added the logo on the inside and finally, the latest was when they changed the metal logo plate from block lettering to beanie font. I make no claims to being an "expert" on Ovation cases; however, I do own at least one good example of each of the cases you have listed, except for the latest version with the interior logo that appeared a couple of years ago. There are, of course, various variations of each model, including the rare tolex case with a purple lining, the first generation brown molded case with the purple lining (instead of brown), and cases with other colored linings that do not conform to the norm. Other than that, I believe you have covered the basics.
With regard to the "blue nightmare fuzz" mentioned my MWoody, I believe the reference is to the black molded case that appeared for short time in the early 1990's. The interior was an inferior quality felt in a light blue color that, among other problems, had the tendency to get very dirty very fast and fall out. Not only did the felt fall out, but for some reason the lining on this case also had the tendency to become unglued and fall out like the headliner in a car. This model was quickly replaced by the black interior that apparently holds up better. |

| Hi Jim,
The change from brown to black appeared around 1990, but may have been as early as 1989. In previous posts we discussed the fact that there were guitars with original brown cases dated from 1989; however, by 1990 they were all black unless old stock. |

Location: Brighton,MI | That doesn't make much sense does it! If original owner had a case it would have been brown...oh well...some how a 1987 guitar ended up with a 1989 or later case.Seems like a case would have been purchased originally with a collector guitar.

Location: Canton (Detroit), MI | Didn't U.S. Ovations come with cases even back in the late 80's time frame???? Yes, I realize that even now, places with the initials GC "steal" the case and try to sell it back to you.
As for why the case is black and not tan, it could be that the original owner did not get a case originally and then bought one later. Also could have swapped cases between guitars, some people are not fussy that way.

One other possibility is that your 1987 set in a store until 1989 and ended up sold with a case from the year it was sold. Sometimes a guitar will set around a store for some reason or another for a few years. For example, when I bought my 70's Viper it was from inventory from a store that had closed from a partnership breakup a year or so before and there were new guitars in that inventory that were 3 years old.
I passed up some acoustic Ovations that I now wish I had bought along with my Viper as the prices were GREAT.
