Just wondering if anyone has mother of pearl trim around their guitar instead of abalone? I am in the process of having another(this will be my 8th)custom Elite 12-string. I was talking with Mark Lamanna in the custom shop (by the way, I know there is not really a custom dept), I told him I wanted to do something really different this time around. He said we could go with mother-of-pearl trimmings(body, fingerboard, peghead)instead of the abalone that I have done to all the others that they have built for me? Has anyone else used MOP? Do you like the cosmetic look compared to abalone?

MOP is a nice decorative material used for inlays and sometimes binding and purfling.

Abalone is a sort of wurst, which when sliced, makes cheep lunchmeat.

Seriously, its just a matter of what you like visually. Abalone has varied range of colors from what I can tell, where as MOP is all pearlescent white or yellow.

What are some of the options out there besides shells?

Is silver, platinum or gold inly plausible? Any lapidary possibilities? Fossilized ivory?

I would consider the MoP rather plain. There are other texture/tones to the Abalone as well including reds, greens and blues.

Can you have a top rimmed in abalone without having the finish stripped first?

MOP is a great looking inlay if done right, abalone used to be as good to eat as a San Diego gourmet sea food, as it was beautiful as an inlay. People made their living diving for abs, selling it for food and the shells for decoration, the food far outshadowed the shells but it had to be prepared properly, beaten into submission, breaded and served to those who wanted to live a life of royalty for a few bucks.

Naw, want to be "special" ?? Synchronized flashing lights, each string controls a section of lights; very distinctive for a finger picker...for Las Vegas, could also control the lights on the performer's jumpsuit.

Maybe Neil would start playing O's again.

Chris, if you haven't already, you need to post some pics of these guitars.

My Haida Gwaii guitars are lined with silver. I know the luthier is currently making some guitars with gold. It looks very nice.

How about turquoise or jade. Or maybe bloodstone? Depending on the color of the top those would all look good.
