I haven't kept you guys updated, but back in December I when and spilled out the cash for a Steve Vai Signature Ibanez Universe 7 String Guitar. It's quickly become my most played guitar...it looks great, plays great, sounds great...the perfect everything for me.

Well I'll stop blabbering and let the pictures speak!

Now the pics I have don't show off the disappearing pyramid inlay well, so here's a pic of another guitar (same model) where the photographer does a better job!

Any and all comments appreciated :D

Nice, glad you like it. Not quite my cup of Chai but nice none the less.

It's tuned (from the highest string) EBGDAEB.

It's a little out of place among a bunch of acoustic players, I admit it. It's pretty far out there, as I know most "shredding" guitars are, and Steve Vai's a pretty unique guy himself so I guess this is to be expected :D

Looks sweet! Always a good thing to be excited about a guitar in my book.

What do you run it through, and how does it sound?

I've been playing it through my Vox Valvetronix AD50VT. Great amp by the way, I've always loved the sound of it.

The basswood and Dimarzio Blaze pups go very well together - it's kind of a dark, mellow sound. The Blaze pups have a bit less output than most high output pups that Ibanez are known for, and are a little harder to distort. But this keeps the low B from getting muddy and gives it a nice thump. These are easily my favorite pick-ups, and the single coil blaze gets great cleans.

Nice Abalone accents! I wish I knew how to play an electric.

Nice total package.

Never could wrap myself around a 7 string but that one looks killer!

Is that a mirrored PG or a smoky glass or just the trick of the lights?

and don't think we are all a bunch of acoustic players. I played hard rock and heavy metal until the late 80's.....then mellowed out with age....like a fine wine

I though the Steve Vai had that silly grab handle hole in the body? ... Or maybe thats just the 6-string version? Anyway, sweet guitar. I looked at Ibanez when I got my Strat. I didn't like the flat "D" neck profiles on the models in my price range. Not enough "meat". What is standard tuning for a 7 strings anyway? I was alway curious how you'd play a 7.

It's got a nice S&M quality to it. I guess the M part is learning to play it!

To StephenT: The pickguard is indeed a mirror! Very cool to show people in person!

To Yak: You are correct, the 7 string Universes don't have the tremolo "Lion's Claw" cavity or the grip. For the grip I'm guessing it's because the body isn't much wider than a 6 string body - but the pick-up routings certainly are which would make the grip look weird and off (more than it already is to some people). Also the tuning from highest to lowest is EBGDAEB.

And to Woody: Yup! The triangular "Light Without Heat Logo" is abalone, as well as the binding on the guitar and the tops of the pyramids (the bases of which are MOP).

Playing wise it's not too different for me than 6 string - since the tuning's the same I always find myself playing a lot of 6 string songs on it as well as playing things that need the 7th string. It's just another low string really, I've adapted to it much easier than I thought I would!

Thanks for all the comments :D
