Having been back to the 9:30 Club in D.C. after about a 20 year lapse, I started to search the "memory banks" for the truly great concert venues I've been to over the years.

There are many good venues, but fewer great Venues.

Philadelphia area has some terrific ones, but for me, the best is the Keswick theater, in Germantown/north Philly. It may be the best venue I've been to for concerts.

The little known 'Scottish Rite Auditorium', in south Jersey is a great place to see shows

In D.C. there are a bunch too, but 'The Barns at Wolf Trap' is truly excellent.

The Senator Theater in Baltimore is outstanding.

The best I've ever performed in are Symphony Orchestra Hall in Chicago (before the expansion project) for sound, Red Rocks Ampitheater west of Denver for ambiance and setting, and the Hollywood Bowl for mojo.

NJPAC (New Jersey Performing Arts Center) in downtown Newark, NJ.
Designed by acoustic engineers and makes Carnegie Hall sound like a bus garage. The architecture and use of materials/surfaces are phenomenal!

I've been to several instrumental shows there (George Winston, Anoushka Shankar, and James Galway come to mind) with absolutely NO sound reinforcement, and heard EVERY note clearly.
Also saw bands like Yes and Tull there a couple of times. The sonic clarity is brilliant!

NJPAC is a fantastic venue.

Long gone is My Father's Place in Roslyn, Long Island. That's probably the last place I can remember where you could buy loose joints at a show.

Better today though is the IMAC Theater in Huntington.

The Tarrytown Music Hall has very nice acoustics too.

Cobo Hall in Detroit. Lots of history there. Inactive for years now, but it still can be called a great venue.

A smaller venue in Detroit was the State Theatre. A couple weeks ago they re-named it "The Fillmore".

Stonebobbo, Great sites, but you left out the concerts at Wente Vineyards in Livermore. A beautiful site on a summer evening for music.

Been to Wente about a half a dozen times ... yes, it is a very pleasant site and the wine and food are quite good, but I'm not too crazy about a the venue itself for listening to music ... the only act I've seen there that made the place sound good was the B-52s -- and the sound was good, not great. Had a great time, tho!
