Hello,

I just bought a used Ovation 6 string and I was wondering if I could get some help with id'ing the model. It looks like an older Balladeer, and the serial number states 1979 manufacture (18XXXX). Unfortunately, I cannot find the model number (the tag is gone). It has a sunburst finish and it looks like a Balladeer, but the bowl appears to be shallower than I would have thought. I have very little frame of reference on this; my only other Ovation is a 1615 Pacemaker, but I thought all the Balladeer models were of the deep bowl variety. I would describe this one as having a "medium size" bowl.

Thank you,
Cliff

Pictures would help, including pics of the headstock, pre-amp/volume&tone controls (if any) and a side view, especially next to your 1615 also on its side. It might be a Country Artist, but it's impossible to say without more data.

You may have one of the old artist bowl guitars which have a similar depth to the mid-bowls. What color are the tuners? Is the neck bound?

Pictures would definitely help with this.

It might be a Country Artist

If it's a nylon string.

Thanks very much for your opinions and suggestions. I am going to try and attach some photos which I hope will help id the guitar. the larger guitar in the photos is the 1615 pacemaker.

Okay, I'm guessing here.

1621 Artist Balladeer
(another one that I wish that I didn't sell)

Definitely Artist depth bowl, probably an Artist Classic. I think the GC Artist had the sig on the truss rod cover.

1621 - Electric Artist Balladeer? I wonder what the bracing is.

Wouldn't an Artist Classic be a nylon string? (the photos show a steel string.)

I think a GC Artist would have gold tuners, the ones in the photo appear to be silver.

OMA's guess of a 1621 Artist Balladeer seems more likely.

OMA is absolutely correct, no doubt about it. It's a 1621, an Artist. The shallow bowl, chrome backed tuners, lack of neck binding and fancy inlay (ie, the Legend and GC Artist) all state that. And for whoever asked, it has VT6 bracing. If you go to www.ovationtribute.com and look at the catalogs from 1972, you'll find this guitar...

I think that bracing pattern is a typo, shouldn't it be "VT8"?

Bracing Patterns

Specs

Would the bracing pattern always be VT8 on a 1621, or would it depend on the year, as it does on some other models?

You guys are simply amazing! I really appreciate your help. I may try and trade this guitar up to a standard Balladeer with the larger bowl. Or I may not. In any event, thanks again for your help.
