Only you, as a prospective buyer can say if the price is expensive or not...for you. :)

FWIW, here are the Collector's that have closed recently on eBay:

11 JUL 04: 1985 Collectors 12-string, $560 end
11 JUL 04: 2002 Collectors, $900 start, no bids
12 JUL 04: 1989 Collectors, $500 start, no bids
19 JUL 04: 1989 Collectors, $371 end
(appears to be the same item from 12 JUL)
21 JUL 04: 1992 Collectors, $500 start, no bids
($700 BIN price)
23 JUL 04: 1988 Collectors, $304 end
(chips and a blem)

That should give you an idea of the range that various Collector's are drawing on eBay. The seller for the item you listed conveniently included the 'Blue Book' values for the year/model that you're looking at. I don't have the Blue Book, so I don't know if they're accurate or not, but just like the auto Blue Books, those figures are designed to give a general idea, not hard numbers. I've even heard that the paperback/CDROM Blue Book's for guitars don't have the same prices as the hard cover (which is allegedly marketed at shop owners and not consumers as the other two are).

I think it's a nice looking piece of kit, and the slothead is...attractive. Best of all, it has a five-piece neck! (I'm biased)

1997 Collector's came in two neck widths, W
(1 7/8") being more rare. N is 1 11/16".

You could see this go for the BIN price. Should go for at least $700-750, probably in the last two minutes of the auction. Elderly had one they sold a couple of months ago, narrow neck, for $785.00

You will find discussions of the '97 Collector's in past posts.

It did take Elderly a couple of months to sell the '97 Parlor, though, it wasn't a quick sale.

IMHO, the BIN price is high. Yes, it could sell for that because on eBay anything can -- and does -- happen. But it wasn't all that long ago that the '97 Collectors' could be routinely had in the $500 - $600 range, and occasionally for bottom feeder bargain prices.

Nice guitar (several OFC members own them). I suspect it goes for $650-700. The case alone is worth $150.

These are wonderfull guitars. They just feel and sound right. Be sure you want the wide neck cause you will pay a premium for it. It is wider than the standard ovation neck and would I think be equivalent to a 12 string neck. I have the narrow neck and it suits me better as I like to wrap my thumb around on the low e base string. I have a 12 and I don't like that extra width. To a person with large hands it may be exactly what you need. I paid $550 for mine about a year ago. One of the best buys in Ovation used.
