Hi all,
Can someone tell the difference between case numbers 81170 and 8217. Both are described the same. I need a new case for my '83 Collectors Series. It's a "super shallow" bowl. Thanx

I have owned both, and there's a BIG difference. The difference can be subtle to the inexperienced. The 91170 is made by TKL. The outer shell is mucc more resilient than the 8217(which is made in China as a cheaper alternative to the TKL). The shell on the Chinese case is very brittle, and there is a space between the shell and the styrofoam. Every time I put the case down on a hard surface(IE:the parking lot so I could open the car door) a little crack would show up at the contact point. After a few months, the case had cracks all over! Hardware and overall solid/plush materials make for the 91170 to be much better protection for our Ovations and much harder to damage the case itself. As a bonus, you get a trussrod wrench with a built-in holder and that white Ovation logo inside the 91170. REALLY worth the xtra $ IMHO. John <>{

It is always worth the extra money for a good case. You wouldn't buy a cheap trailer for your expensive boat would you? (Yes I know lots of people do)

Sorry, I keep resurrecting old threads (not that anyone notices or cares). I curious if anyone has an opinion concering the different companies that make ovation cases. So far I know of TKL and SKB. I like how my SKB case looks, it's more "curvy" than the TKL case. Don't know if it's of better quality, though. The tag says it was manufactured "south of the border".

Both make good cases covering a wide range of prices and quality. That is more of an issue than where it was made. I get TKL cases for my old Nationals all the time (when I get an ebay wonder without a case). They're great. Don't have that much experience with SKB.

The cheaper case will work fine if you NEVER take your guitar out of your house, that is, you use it as a storage device. I have a friend who does just that, and when she goes out she uses a sturdy gig bag. Works great for her. Speaking of gig bags, I've been informed by reliable sources that the upgraded tribal planet GX-40 bags will be availble in the US in January.

Actually Dave, I was poking fun at all of the knock-off "designer" stuff they hawk on Manhattan streetcorners:

Goocci handbags
Roll-X watches
Tommy Hillfigure sportswear
Oaklee sunglasses
Ralph Laruen underwear . . . .

I know the difference between the 9117-0 and the 8117-0/8217, but what's the difference between the 8117-0 and the 8217? They look the same in pictures.
