Can anyone tell me what cables are needed to connect my guitar to the computer?

At the most basic level you'll need a mono 1/4inch to stereo mini-jack but you'll get better results going via a notepad mixer such as the Behringer 602

I 2nd what he said :) The impendance mismatch to the computer will be corrected by the mixer, and Behringer is the best unit for this as it automatically adjusts to the correct impedance.

Probably too much info... but anyway... do what Paul sais... you'll be a happy camper.

Don't forget the duct tape, the 2" stuff. I always needed lots of that hooking up electronic gear.

I'm not really good with computers. The Behringer 602 looks kind of advance for me. I'm looking at this GuitarPort Line6 thingie. Can I connect using this instead? Or is that for something else?

I have a Guitar Port and it's a fantastic piece of kit, but it is designed for electric guitars. The amp simulations are very convincing, however plugging an electro-acoustic into a Marshall, Vox or Boogie amp wouldn't be a great idea & this is essentially what you'd be doing with the Guitar Port. You can bypass the amp simulations but that would be a very expensive way to plug your guitar into your computer. I'm surprised that the Guitar Port software doesn't include an Trace acoustic amp simulation.

Come to think of it... Behringer makes the V-amp and it blows the POD stuff away, IMHO.. and it has nice clean and acoustic sounds also.. They are only about $125 I think.. and there is a line out that would be perfect for computer.

I just want to do a little solo acoustic recording. Listening to myself play would most likely improve my playing. I usually play unplugged with the computer's mic next to me, but it sounds very low and crappy. I've tried to up the volume with music programs, but the sound quality isn't there. I just want something really simple. Is there anything made especially for this?

About the Guitar Port...
Does the sound go through the computer's speakers, or do I need a guitar amp for this?

The Guitar Port uses whatever speakers you computer uses. The better thae speakers, the better the results. If you have basic multi-media speakers, the kind supplied with the computer, it would be better to connect the computer to your hi-fi for use with the Guitar Port.

Sound Blaster Live 5.1 with hardware will do it.

Keep it simple, as they say.
Depending on your preamp output level, impedance match blah, blah blah, you will want to use the line IN on your sound card. If you dont get enough level (volume) then move into the mic input.

What IS important is that these inputs are stereo and you guitar is probably mono.If you use a stereo 1/4" to 1/8" converter with you guitar cord, you will, in affect, short one channel to ground. This may let some smoke out of your sound card, and that would not be good.

Not having a mixer or other cool toys mentioned above, I modified my Stereo headphone extension cord by connecting the left and right channels to the tip and leaving the ring terminal unused. Then when I plug my guitar cord into this it puts guitar signal on both left and right channels in the soundcard and the smoke stays in. Of course this cable cannot be used for a headphone extension any more but thats ok. $4 buys another one.

My system is a Sound Blaster Live 5.1 and cheapo speakers with a subwoofer. Not a Marshal Stack by any means but a lot of fun to play through for practice, with the SB live having tons of effects.

If you need more info I can help you off line with diagrams and detailed instructions I'd be happy to help.

Good luck.

Thanks alot, but I don't think I can take that risk with my computer(it's a brand new system).
But the GuitarPort seems like a very fun gadget that won't toast my sound card. Maybe I'll try that instead.

Thanks alot for the reply, you guys have been very helpful~!
