When I tuned my new guitar it sounds great while playing the string open, but when I play chords some of my strings are sharp and it sounds like crap. I took it in and had it adjusted, but it's still doing it. Any idea what's going on? could something be wrong with the guitar? and if not, how can I fix it? It's driving me crazy!!!!!

What kind of guitar is it??

How old are the strings??

You might wanna look into a fresh set . . .

Do you by chance have a penchant for playing your chords with a "death grip" on light gauge strings??

What kind of guitar is it? Did you buy it new or used? And what kind of strings are on it?

This is more common with electrics than with acoustics. It all gets down to nut compensation which is why Buzz Feiten, Earvana, etc., have become a big business.

I think people cursed with "perfect pitch" find this A LOT more annoying than 90% of the guitar playing sector who either don't notice it, have become accustomed to it over many years of playing, or just assume it is the way of an imperfect instrument (the guitar)when it comes to pitch.

About half of my guitars had a slight to serious problem with this (all electric - no acoustic issues) and I solved it with a product that I stumbled across called the eNut.

The eNut is amazing in that it only costs about $15, can be removeable without any signs of installation or permanately mounted. I have 4 of mine permanately mounted and 3 of them are set up to be removed (due to the value of the guitar). I have an website somewhere....I will find it and post it.

All of this fuss has to do with the note scales that our music has developed over centuries, every note is not, and can't be mathematically perfect. Put on some earmuffs and play the s--t as best you can, perfection will only come when Jesus arrives with Gabriel's trumpet blowing, and a bunch of sinners being used as firewood for the bonfires celebrating the triumph of GOOD. Most of our guitars will also be in those bonfires, due to their deficiencies of tone.

Until then, I'm going to play mine and enjoy it, flats and sharps and all, if Segovia can stand it, I sure can!!

Bailey
PS I have seen some of the greatest sinners CHEAT and bend the strings to achieve tonal Nirvana, they play the Debbil's music, BLUES.

Hmmm, the "Nut Slotting Tool" shown on that website looks *EXACTLY* like the acetelene torch tip cleaning tool I use at the body shop. It's even the same color. The "nut shaping file" on the tool is for re-shaping burnt copper torch tips. I suppose it would work fine for cutting nut slots but that's not what it was made for.

You are EXACTLY right. A couple of weeks ago my wife had found my tip cleaning tool and laid it our on the kitchen table, (meaning this ain't mine, so it must be yours, so put it with your junk)I had it here on my computer table, with a lot of my other stuff. Saw the one advertised on that web site. I am going to try it out on a LP copy where the G string hangs in the nut and just as you think you have it in tune, it pops up to G#.

If you want to try one, go to your hardware store, they might even have one in the $2.98 pile of tools.
