Amidst the ever-increasing rapid pace of modern life and it's forward focus on the future, I feel it's our generational obligation to pass on our knowledge gleaned both, from our own experience as well as, that of the giants upon whose shoulders we stand, to the generations following us, lest that knowledge be lost to history much as, the Etruscan Alphabet or Shamanistic Catalogs of Medicinal Plants....

In that spirit, I offer:

The "Whammy Bar"

The Whammy Bar (aka; Trem Bar, Tremelo, Vibrato) became known as such, as a reference to the ground-breaking Blues/Rock fusion Lead guitar work of Lonnie Mack on his genre defining album entitled 'Wham" where he uses a Bigsby vibrato to achieve theretofore unheard distortion effects. The sound was so distinctive, the virbrato became known was the "Whammy Bar" in Blues-Rock culture.

Let us not forget the 80's with the Floyd Rose, and the Kahler setups (can I get a collective rolling of the eyes please?).

The most idiotic thing that I remember seeing was those Kahler bass guitar whammy bars. What were they thinking?!? Has anyone ever tried one? Or even seen/heard one is use?!?

I always preferred the Strat style myself, but it's been many a year since I've done a whammy bar divebomb. It was cool in 75-76. Jimi was gone and Beck was the only one still doing that. Then along comes Eddie... The end of my whammy career!

I thought Whammy Bar was where George Michael goes to pick up chicks.

Lonnie was probably the first as Jeff pointed out. Great Guy.
I've spent some time hanging out with him and mostly he was finger picking an Old Epiphone acoustic and doing old blues or bleugrass stuff. Real good player.
He had the Bigsby on his Flying V and would mostly use it on up strokes, holding the handle with the pinky and the pick with thumb and index and do real fast repetive up strokes. You can realy hear that on the Album with Stevie Ray.

I once heard someone refer to it as a "torsion bar".

And I've seen ol' George with his boyfriend shopping in St. Thomas... no George DON'T pick up chicks!
